Volume Slider on App

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 26 September 2018

Dear Forum members

I use the Naim app on my i-phone with both my main system and a Qb. On the main system there are some handy  + and - 'buttons' which means  that I can set the volume fairly accurately. However, with the Qb there is only an annoying slider which means that setting the volume is extremely hit or miss.

Not a massive issue I guess, but does anyone know if you can change the slider to the buttons as I've searched through the settings and can't find anything.

Thanks for any help.

Nope - that’s down to how volume controls are implemented in your SuperNait2 and Muso.

SN2 uses an analogue volume control, so the +/- on the app sends discrete commands, akin to the same your infrared remote does.

Muso uses a digital volume control, so a slider was implemented. I guess a +/- could have worekd too. At the end of the day all is software controlled anyway

It's as Adam says. However with the slider you can see where it is, whereas with the +/- buttons you have no feedback at all except what you hear. So it's swings and roundabouts.

The slider is Naim’s preferred option, and is only missing from the separate streamer/preamp systems because it could not be implemented on them. Personally, I prefer the +/- option too, and for the Muso/Uniti/272 it could be supplemented by the numerical volume level that is seen on the front panel.

Thanks for the responses. My Qb is in my bedroom, and I find that the slider (on an iPhone) is really inaccurate, or am I just clumsy?

If I'm using it at night, I want to avoid turning it up too much/too loud, which the buttons don't do. It would have been nice to have the choice.

Other than this minor gripe with the app, loving the Qb.

Seconded. I use the Naim app on Android and find controlling volume difficult. Fat fingers perhaps,

Much prefer the ability to control volume by the +/- on the device which Bubble UPNP can do. Be nice to have both options.

My volume slider on Android using a 272 has occasionally disappeared and I have to go into settings to turn it back on again, I have no idea why this happens and it only started with the new app.

The volume bar disappeared again today and I was presented with - and + plus a solid white dot at the end. Thinking that by pressing the dot the normal volume bar would appear well how wrong could I be, my 272 went from 38 on the volume to 60, Jesus Christ I'm running new speakers in!!!

Not impressed, this Android app is not fit for purpose and it needs some serious attention.

Yes I’ve noticed the volume is a bit hit and miss so I accessed the volume settings on my Unities and now SuperUniti and reduced the highest setting which is 100 and reset it to 50 and I’ve found that makes a bit of an improvement on the operation of the slide bar.

I’d like to see the slide bar width increased a bit if possible.

Hope that helps..

Not sure why we need the - and + as it doesn't do anything well nothing on my 272.

The dot an the other hand well that works....

Come on Naim the app has been 8 years in the making the volume isn't the only issue either.

When returning back to the artist selection whilst an album is playing 50% of the time I have to keep pressing back, back, back until 272 appears on the room list then drill back in.

Also after selecting a track it plays for a fraction of a second, starts the track again, plays a second until I crash the app.

The previous version was more stable.

Great hardware but the software is a BIG let down.

There's nothing 'world class' about the Naim app

You are clearly having some serious issues with the app. How on earth you are seeing +/- volume controls with a 272 I have no idea - the app should be showing only a slider. I would suggest that you get in touch with Naim about this. For me, the app is generally very reliable, but obviously you have not been so lucky.

That's what I thought Chris and am I right in thinking the -/+ is for the new range of streamers.

The white dot to the right of the -/+ pissed me off as the volume went from a comfortable 38 to 60, I don't see the point of this function even on the new platforms.

One thing, I do own a Muso QB at my caravan so is it possible the app is becoming confused.

+/- volume controls are used on separate streamers, because they do not have their own volume control, but use Naim's System Integration to allow the streamer, app and remote to control the volume pot on a Naim preamp via a wired connection. Both old and new separate streamers have this. The slider is what you should see on Musos, Unitis (old and new) 172 and 272.

Ah okay thanks for explaining this so my Android app using the 272 or QB should only show the slider. I will drop Naim an email but I guess they will say remove the app and see how it goes.

I would guess that Naim will want to know about this, as it shouldn't be happening, and I don't recall anyone else reporting the same issue. Maybe it is specific to the Android device you are using?
