More portable Muso?

Posted by: JedT on 27 September 2018

Must have been discussed before (sorry) but has there been any talk of a Muso that is easier to carry about? Ideally but not necessarily battery powered. It would be great to extend the multiroom play onto the patio etc at times. Even a QB is actually quite awkward to carry.

And no, I have no desire to carry one beatbox style through the streets!

Isn’t it called a Qube?

I did hear a Muso once and was impressed with the sound from so compact a unit, and it is tempting as a transportable, if not strictly portable device - I’ve no idea how easy it is to move around, however surely can’t be all that difficult?

But crucially it would need to be able to play without a hitch by wifi, which repeated posts on the forum suggest is not always reliable, and always reliable surely is essential to be usable. Plugging into mains is less of an issue as anywhere in the house is readily in reach. I think it has a usb socket so short term uses in places out of reach of wifi would be possible with a memory stick, except that would be limited to preloaded music - so to be truly valuable as a portable device it would benefit from having a radio tuner built in, and not just rely on internet radio.

Battery powered portable Muso came before the mains powered version....

Playing music in the garden is profoundly irritating to the neighbours, unless they are miles away of course.

I think the OP has a good point.   A portable with headphone socket with internal SSD that could also be plugged into the car.

Quite a few cars now have a 230v 3 pin option for the rear seats or boot and also embedded modems, I've taken the Nespresso on long trips, now a Muso and some strobe lights, bring on the mobile disco down Southend sea front ????

Or as per the Picture thread just buy a Bentley Conti GT ????

Agreed. Omce in a blue moon acceptable, but some inconsiderate nearby neighbours play a radio loudly in the garden every time there is nice weather - just when others are trying to enjoy their gardens.

Mind you, I did once use my hifi system in the garden, and playing at ‘realistic’ sound levels (sounding fantastic, but that's another subject) - however several neighbours were in my garden enjoying it, and it wax a one-off event...

Another good way to irritate them is to mow the lawn at 7.00 AM on a Sunday morning.

Surely in the summer, at first light?

My son has a Mu-so QB and even me and my poorly spine can get it downstairs in a second for placing on the patio when it’s barbecue time.

Look I do know you can carry them, obviously. But QB is not exactly friendly to carry - doesn't have a grab handle, needs two hands and yes requires you to go get an extension cable etc. It does appear that there is a quite a sizeable market for more easily portable networked speakers. I'd just like one that integrated with my other Naim units.

As it is I don't own a Muso - kitchen system is a UQ with ceiling speakers.

On the antisocial front, we quite often have friends around who like music. Playing music on the main system with  doors open is actually noisier than having a speaker nearer to the audience. Our house is detached at the end of a street with the patio next to our boundary with fields (i.e. as far from our neighbours as possible and shielded by our house) so we're not being obnoxious.

A Muso, or even a QB, is capable of pumping out the volume, potentially to quite antisocial levels if you have neighbours. A little portable battery powered player might be more suitable.

I like the idea of a portable addition to the Mu-So family.  However, I'm a bit concerned as to how big and heavy the battery will need to be to provide the required power - don't forget that even in the Mu-So Qb you have 300W of amplification.  Maybe some sort of dual mode would be needed so that power is restricted when powered by a battery..?

Speaking of portable Naim systems, I was reminded of this early attempt at a portable Naim system from the Cornflake Shop.  The system graced the cover of the September 1986 issue of New Hifi Sound in which it was featured.

I loved my Pro Walkman. Had some Kans as well at the same time. So I borrowed a Nait from stock and put together the exact system in the photo sans cabinetry. Was good for a laugh. Sony also released their first discman around this time. So naturally I tried this too.

In both cases the Nait/Kans were too revealing of the shortcomings of the source. Popped some LS3a's into the mix and suddenly it all was sweet syrup radiogram style.

Richard,

Thanks for posting the Nait - Walkman - Diamonds picture.

I had a Nait once and still have a Walkman pro....must dig it out

Brought a smile as I was sharing a flat with a mate who worked at the Cornflake Shop at the time of that picture. He later left and joined Roksan as there UK sales rep,as the Xerxes had just come out.I used to love visiting the Cornflake Shop and I remember they used to do stands which went all the way over the speaker cabinets for Diamonds and Kans.Similar to Roksan Darius Stands with the cabinet enclosed by spikes top and bottom....Wife approval factor -10 !

I loved The Cornflake shops minimal choice back in the day.....Record Players.......  Roksan - Rega -SME

Amps ......Naim - Counterpoint - PS Audio - Bryston

Cassette - Sony Walkman and Nakamichi     Speakers Acoustic Energy - Wharfedale Diamonds - Roksan
