Hi-Cap/Stageline advice please

Posted by: Jonners on 30 September 2018

Greetings, ""Baffled of Banbury" here.

There are already posts covering this topic in Forum history but I am still unsure so hoping for advice from members experienced in connectivity matters.

I currently use a Stageline connected into AUX2 on my 282. I plan to upgrade by buying and dedicating a HiCap to the Stageline. The HiCap will not be supplied with an interconnect.

The Stageline is the older 2 socket model. So...what do I need to buy, how does it all connect together and what sockets are to be used on Stageline and HiCap?

Thanks folks!

Jonners, you already have a SNAIC5 on your Stageline so you can use that to connect and take power from the Hicap (note that the Hicap would have come with a SNAIC 5 as standard when new).  Then it's just a case of a 4-5 interconnect to take signal from the Stageline/Hicap to the NAC282.  As it sounds like you have a later unit, you can take signal either directly from the Stageline or do it like the earlier Stagelines where signal was taken from the power supply.

I run a Stageline into the Aux 2 on my 252, but plan to switch either to the brand new Rega Aria or the little Dynovector, subject to home audition. I’m not convinced throwing money and black boxes at the Stageline is good value. It’s very good, but I plan to explore the possibility that better phono stages can be bought without breaking the bank.

Thanks Richard, very helpful. I had hoped I could use the existing interconnect I have. Would you (or anyone other members) know which connector on the back of the Hicap I should connect this existing SNAIC5 cable into which will run to the Stageline and which one to connect the 4-5 pin to (which will then go to the 282)?

Well that's an interesting thought as well KRM which I hadn't considered. I can pick up a 2nd hand Hicap off Fleabay for about £500. The Stageline was £200 and I'll probably have to spend £50 or so on an extra interconnect. So, question is - "what phono stages are out there for £750 or less which will deliver better performance than a Stageline + Hicap bundle?"

My source is an LP12/Roksan Nima/AT Cart MM

Jonners, you connect the 240 degree DIN5 to the Stageline (via SNAIC5, naturally enough), then any of the three DIN4 signal outs on the Hicap to take signal to the pre-amp (via 4-5 interconnect).

For SNAIC and interconnect ID, see the forum FAQ:

Super, thanks Richard!

Stageline hicap is a great combination, admittedly not value for money at new prices but I’d be surprised if you get much better elsewhere for the £750 s/h price. The Rega aria is an obvious candidate I’d like to listen to and also more flexible supporting mm or mc cartridges. Let us know how you get on

There's an argument for just sticking with Aux2 and using the HC money to take your Linn further.

You are absolutely right so that is what I will do having weighed up all the options.

Which way will you go with the Linn then?

Darned if I know to be honest - the options are endless! I've got a fairly basic model by LP12 standards - Cirkus/Trampolin/Kore fitted with a Roksan Nima arm and AT cart. Any ideas where to start with something which ain't a wallet-buster?

I will give the dealer a shout, he put it together for me using new and traded-in parts. See what he has to say. Limgo makes the most sense methinks. There are 3 models, much to choose between them would anyone say?
