NDX2 Power Up Issue

Posted by: Crispy on 01 October 2018

I am having problems powering on my new NDX2. This first happened out of the box. The screen came on for less than a second and then went dark. The power button flashed green, but did not do anything when pressed. After trying for a few minutes I turned off and on a few times before it came to life.

Yesterday I returned from a week away and the same thing happened again.

I am powering direct from the mains and not through a power supply.

Any thoughts appreciated

Sounds to me like it needs to go back to your dealer.

I had a problem a bit like that with my Uniti Core. If you plugged it in and turned on the power, it would quickly settle into a sort of offness and no pressing of any button would have any effect. I discovered by accident that if I turned off the power and immediately turned it on again, all was ok.

Presumably this is something to do with the handover between the linear and SMPS power supplies, but I haven't bothered to pursue it any further.

Thanks David. Sounds very similar. The app even sees the NDX2 but cannot connect to it. If this is something that cannot be addressed by firmware then will push for replacement given it is not right out of the box. When spending that kind of money it has to be right.

Agreed, it should work perfectly. It’s strange that the soak testing at the factory isn’t picking this up. They certainly used to switch everything on and off numerous times to ensure everything is ok before being packed up and dispatched.

Yes I asked Naim support about this Core issue. I had to chase them several times over the course of a month before anyone replied, but after my fourth email to Naim support, Phil replied saying "Take it back to your dealer for a replacement." But it wasn't convenient for me to do that at the time,  so I just continue to make it start up the way I described in my last post. But in your situation I would go for the replacement unit now.

Crispy, do you have an external PSU powering the NDX2 if not have you powered off the NDX2  and reseated the burndy plug a few times.

No, direct to mains. PSU to follow once budget and wife approval received.

There's still a burndy link plug, well there should be otherwise the NDX won't work.

Good point HiFiman...Many people, including myself, forget about the Link Plug.

Link plug in place. There is power there as the power button flashes green and after a few attempts of powering off and on it has come to life, but something is not right. As I understand it with a PSU it bypasses the SMPS. The SMPS is pointless in most cases as people will leave it off due to the sound quality improvement.

Crispy,

Is the green Naim logo (middle of the front fascia) still on ?

Because I have had my HDX SMPS burn out once because of a power spike, but the front green Naim logo was still powered up. So the different (main toroidal)  internal power supply still had power to some part of the HDX, just the power the SMPS supplied didn’t work - the HDX front screen for instance etc.

Perhaps your SMPS has crashed too ?

I will power down tonight and check. Am a bit nervous switching off at the moment as it is up and running. If burn out had occurred would this mean it would not switch on at all?

I wouldn’t overthink this. If you turn it off and it won’t turn on again, then it’s faulty and must be replaced. You should have no doubts about your new NDX2. It should work perfectly every single time. It doesn’t really matter why it doesn’t work, it’s simply that if there is something wrong with it, you should have a new one.

Yes and Naim would want to know why it’s occurring to prevent it happening to others. Get on to your dealer and get him to organise a replacement.

Not sure about the NDX2, SMPS / main toroidal what does what.

But on my HDX the SMPS did the front lcd screen and other stuff. I couldn’t get the n-Serve app. to operate at all. However the Naim green logo in the front center of the fascia was still on. I did try a few hard main unit resets but no joy, the lcd main screen and  n-Serve app. Did not work at all.

My local Naim repair guy said my SMPS unit was cooked from a mains spike.

So what you are saying is the NDX2 screen will power up sometimes / then go off sometimes and back on again after a main power reset, strange...

On NDX2 the SMPS just powers some minimal circuitry in standby so the unit can be woken up. Once it wakes up, everything is powered by the linear supply.

Just to add, about activation from deep sleep mode. I also have the same problem with my core, when trying to activate core from deep sleep mode. As David, quite rightly stated, switching power from supply socket on/off/on, wakes the unit up. I suspect this might be a bigger problem for Naim, seeing the timespan from David's and myself purchase of Uniti Core, to Crispy's recent purchase of NDX2. How long has the problem been out there ???

So far when cold (new out of the box and after holiday switch off) when you turn it on the screen comes to life for about half a second and then goes black. The green power light flashes but nothing happens as if it is bricked. The app can see the NDX2 but will not connect to it. Turning off and on at the mains a few times eventually kicks it into life and it runs perfectly. Just nervous about turning off as switching off and on repeatedly cannot do it any good and could impact SMPS. My dealer is very good and on case. Need to chase him for an update. On the plus side I am now on day 4 of running in and it is now opening up and starting to sound special.

Hope it is sorted soon, shame that it’s coming on song though if it is subsequently replaced.

Spoke with someone from Naim support this afternoon and he was very helpful. Advised that there was nothing they could do remotely and would need the unit back. He is now going to push for a replacement, so once that arrives can do a straight swap. Did mention the switching on/off/on and he stated that was not recommended. Hopefully once they get my NDX2 back they will be able to identify the underlying cause and sort. Fingers crossed replacement is perfect.
