New Rega Planar 8 (RP8) TT announced
Posted by: Yetizone on 04 October 2018
The new Rega Planar8 has been announced and it looks even more minimalist than before, dispensing with the outer plinth and traditional Rega rectangular dust cover entirely. Plus, trickle down tech / 'inspired' from the Naiad (will that TT ever see production I wonder). So potentially a cut price Naiad perhaps.
"The Planar 8 was inspired by the ultimate Rega turntable, the 'Naiad'. We decided early on that instead of an evolution of the previous RP8, the new Planar 8 was to be developed and engineered to encapsulate the essence of 'Naiad' at an affordable price. Our aim was to deliver a level of performance far beyond what has been achieved at this price point before."
Looking forward to hearing it at some point and bodes well for the RP10. More over at Rega Towers ...
That looks rather wonderful, and so tiny. It’s too small for the standard Rega wall mount, so they are introducing a lightweight one specially for it. It’s so cool it’s rather tempting to buy one, just to look at.
Just a plug.......it will be at Audio Show East Nov, 2/3. Great event...and a more relaxed Hifi show. Hope you can make it.....next Ipswich.
It looks great! Only shame is that the outer plinth and cover have now gone - that's one of the things I love most about the RP8 and RP10 - such a smart bit of design, and such a simple solution, you wonder why nobody thought of it before.
It's all a bit Lotus Seven for me.
Just stick with the fruitbox in that case.
Purely based on the look the P 25 remains my favorite Rega, but it’s nice to see that they are still following their path.

Having never been to a HiFi show, I must say that the Signals bash is the only one that has appeared remotely interesting. But as I’m going to see Tord Gustavsen on the 2nd and a new play at Chichester Festival Theatre on the 3rd, it’s a no. Ipswich is rather a long way to go in any event, though it would be good to meet up with other Forum members.

Lovely. Superbly simple engineering.
REGA - The lotus of hi-fi
Right down to the "minimalist" dust cover. Would be nice if they could hinge it separately so you don't have to put it someplace else. Perhaps the wall mount could have a hinge for the cover problem is the tt would have to be precisely sited on the shelf if it is to come down precisely on the center spindle.
Shame it still looks like a Fisher Price toy with that unfinished side profile.
Neat
But ultimately impractical I think - lack of a real dust cover, means it will be covered in it within 6 months....
I preferred the look of the p25 and p9. Have the rp10, like it for the simplicity and sound, the platter too. But overall don’t like the look very much.
Very nice,
What it going to retail at ?
I can imagine it would wipe the floor with Linn's Majik LP12
Always really admired Rega for design and incredible Value for money. An absolute British treasure.Linn have got very greedy in their pricing over the years.
Is that foam? If so, they should hide it imho....

I bet it won't

The design, simplicity, sound, value for money is marvelous. But the look is a bit “ Fisher price “. I criticize, but I had rega p3, p25, p9, and now rp10. Fortunately, the sound is the most important.

Awesome, especially as prices are similar to the RP8
I do not like the separate box for speed control. .
But that's me. .
It is an interesting development in terms of how much smaller the new P8 is, especially considering the last design gave the choice of skeletal or full plinth (and a traditional Rega dust cover). I think it looks rather elegant in its striking minimalist form. The RP8 and 10 were also beautifully designed and this moves things forward.
Fisher Price? Brilliant, bring it on! Even though I like the design (and sound) of the traditional decks (LP12 owned many moons ago), I personally think its refreshing there isn’t a hint of hardwood in sight.
My main reservations are how vulnerable to marking that exposed foam core is going to be. Plus, the tonearm (and cartridge) look like they could be vulnerable due to minimal plinth overhang around the arm mounting area and along its length - one slip of a MF cloth and it could be an expensive mishap.
Take your point HH, a new dedicated shelf will be required due to its dinky size. That will be a bit of a faff for Rega bods upgrading decks with their own Rega shelf already in situ.
I look forward to the reveal of the Planar 10 in due course.
