TIDAL - double account mistake!

Posted by: Vik71 on 04 October 2018

Hi all,

I thought I'd share my rather daft mistake of keeping (and paying for two TIDAL HIFI subscriptions/accounts) for close to a full year. Having recently moved countries and generally been extremely busy I hadn't realized that I had inadvertently created a second TIDAL HIFI account with my second e-mail.

My monthly fee being CHF 25.90, I realized this week that I've been paying twice each month for this stupidity. Raising the issue with TIDAL did not help: their robo-advisor informed me within a few minutes of my "ticket submission" stating:

"As a TIDAL member residing in a country that is part of the European Union, you have the right to receive a refund on the last charge within fourteen days but only if you have not started streaming or downloading any content." - this is when I learned that Switzerland is part of the EU

Lesson learnt: So, it is worth checking from time to time any automated payments/subscriptions that most of us (I assume) make regularly.

Needless to say, I cancelled my TIDAL subscription in a state of anger kicking myself, and started a new Spotify Extreme family subscription literally on the spot. The quality of Spotify Extreme is considerably lower than TIDAL's HIFI, but for the moment it will do.

Cheers,

Vik

Is your decision to dump Tidal a bit "extreme" ?  I'd be really annoyed with myself too so I know where you are coming from. ????

How does the Spotify "Extreme" at 320 kbps sound (in comparison to Tidal)? I would not expect it to be better than Apple Music?

The chances of Tidal doing the decent thing and refunding you seem pretty remote. OK, it was your mistake, but as they have, now knowingly, charged you twice, there is still a moral argument that they should refund you.

If you want a lossless alternative, you could always instal BubbleUPnP - I'm beginning to sound like a stuck record here, as I think it's the 3rd time I've said this in as many days! Still, that would allow you to use Qobuz, who, in my experience, have even worse customer service than Tidal! Still, they have a lossless service that many prefer to Tidal, and with Bubble, you can use it with an NDX.

Having committed a number of dumb mistakes in my life that cost me some money/ My experience is i have found that a number of inquiries I made to banks, credit card companies and various companies were received in good faith and many provides full or partial relief while others said they could not correct the situation.

A couple of places I will not do business with again while others I found the service or product they offered was the best available and was only hurting myself because of my own stupidity and still do business with them.

I think with age I am a lot more mellow about my own mistakes and tend not to expect others to make up for my deficiencies. Still it never hurts to ask, I just do not get upset as much as I use to.........

I feel your pain. Having said that, I have Spotify disabled. Only lossless streaming for me, compromising SQ seems counterintuitive to having a Naim system. I had an issue a while back with buying an album that wouldn’t work in my Mac, no refund, I put it down to experience. I’d have to say though, Tidal HiFi is pretty awesome with the Naim App and it’s opening up a  world of music for me, so that has to be a good thing.

Arrrrrgh that's annoying,  can you not get Qudos in Switzerland the do a free trial I think it is at least equal to Tidal or you using a non compatible streamer?

It hardly seems Tidal’s fault that you were careless and didn’t keep an eye on your bank account, which is something everyone should do. The Qobuz service is good though, and if you pay the annual Sublime subscription of £220 you get lossless streaming and big discounts on high res downloads. I rarely use it for streaming but easily save more than £20 per month on downloads. Unlike Chris above, I’ve found their customer service to be excellent.

Great feedback guys, and the empathy is apprecaited very much, so thanks! The absence of human touch and understanding actually annoyed me more in TIDAL's approach than the money wasted to be honest. Now, that this is behind, I can focus on the solution. Spotify will stay - family members prefer the interface and the lower quality of streaming at 320kb does not seem to bother anyone but me. I am not excluding a return to Tidal - but not before the wound heals)

As for Qobuz - it is indeed available in Switzerland and I am intrigued to explore this option soon - should be able to play it directly from my macbook through a wired usb connection, so no problem - a free trial being available.  It is good to have options.

@Frank Yang - Tidal Premium sounds the same as Spotify Extreme at 320 kbs; perceptable differences occur b/n the two at HiFi level in favor of Tidal. As for Apple Music at 256 kbs it is apparently on par with a 320 kbs by Spotify or Tidal - lossy formats.

For now, i will spin some good old vinyl. Enjoy the weekend. Vik
