Picture quality - for standard definition DVD - and sound quality are superb on the DVD5.  The former has of course been rather eclipsed by both Blu-ray and now Blu-ray 4k, but sound quality is still very relevant, particularly when used as a DVD-A player.

Picture was at its best when using the full analogue BNC component output (with the Naim component cable) into a suitable screen - I used a Fujitsu Plasma, similar to the ones used at the factory for development. The result was exceptionally film-like with very natural skin tones.

However, as you mention, operation could be a little bit quirky, particularly when switching between  use as a video/DVD machine to a CD player and/or back again. This was because the player would essentially set itself up specifically to be one or the other, defeating certain circuitry when run as a CD player, but still needing to remember that it was a DVD player when a DVD was then subsequently fed into the drawer.

I've had mine since it was launched, but now i have difficulty to get it to play. The eject draw struggles to open, the picture on the screen is miss mash and now has difficulty playing DVD's and when it does it stutters. However it seems alright in playing CD's, so it will go into retirement on that.

Steve, you may get lucky and some dealers may still have one, otherwise the usual online places would be a good place to look.  It was expensive when new though...

If you have no luck with dealers Steve, try Mark Grant cables.

It's really worthwhile going for the Naim cable. It was far and away the best lead for connecting the DVD5 and one of the few to offer not only the correct BNCs but also an RGBHV connection (i.e 5 BNC connectors at each end) for Plasmas and projectors so equipped.

I bought a used DVD5 and used it as a CD player for a few years. It was great as a CD player! I would still have it if I didn't get into streaming.

I just bought s/h DVD5 and I am more than happy with its CD performance.
However, with DVDs in 5.1 with no menu options for selection of 2 channel sound, the sound is very bad and very quiet.
The top menu being usually in 2 channel sound is just fine.
this was described in this thread:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/t...-during-dvd-playback
Is there any solution to that issue or I will just have to live with it?

If there’s only 5.1 on the disc - ie no 2 channel track, then if you want to listen in 2 channel it mixes down and as such levels are lowered by quite a bit.

Does your DVD5 have the multichannel board option fitted?

I guess it does, judging by the presence of DIN output for surround channels. The firmware info reads:

C0101
M00007
C0206
06 112

Is there any newer firmware dealing with this issue?

No idea. You’re best off checking with Naim.

ps. The dins are there whatever IIRC, but might be wrong as so long since I saw a basic DVD5. Again best check with Naim.
