SL2 Placement

Posted by: Buster Clayton on 05 October 2018

Hu Guys,

system is LP12/52/135’s/SL2’s

The issue I have is that in my seated listening position the bass has far less weight and depth than when stood to the side with the speaker Firing straight at me... (same either side)

as the SL2’s are either side of a bay window I’m not really able to bring them any closer than 7 feet apart without sacrificing the solid wall behind....  my ears are 9 feet away !

The speakers are as close to the rear wall as possible without the crossovers touching the wall.... I know SL2’s are designed to fire straight ahead but my temptation is to toe them in hoping to hear a stronger bass response.... am I thinking along the right lines ?

i know the answer is to experiment but as I’m sure SL2 owners will attest moving these things around isn’t as straight forward as ‘normal’ speakers....

TIA

Mark

Here is my outfit which works perfectly as a workaround for my leather sofa:

But - and this is back serious: I have a large leather sofa, and have no issues. There is a big fabric carpet in front of it though and the room is spacious.

I can imagine that a leather sofa is an issue in a room having only hard surfaces.

You can always play with the circumstances by using some towels, blankets etc ...

Should be fine. The room is well damped having full carpet and curtains. I’ll add a couple of extra cushions just to sure though.

How far to folks have their SL2s from the rear wall (measuring from the wall to the back edge of the top of the speaker)?

Mine are currently limited by my non-Naim speaker plugs. They sound fab, but I might consider putting Naim plugs on my TQ. I'm also pondering having my old NACA A5 re-soldered and swapping back to that.

9cm; just enough for the SL speaker wires.

I know this is probably obvious but they are solidly spiked into the floor on all four corners aren't they?

Good point Bruce.

How are your SL2s spikes located on your floor Mark?

Mark.

If you are still following this post can you let Bruce and me know how you ended up siting your speakers on your floor?  Please.

Hi Guys, sorry busy couple of days with work and travel logistics....

they are directly spiked to the floor through thick carpet and undelay on wooden floors.... they’re pretty solid but I’m not really happy with it.

Considering concrete slabs or mana ?

thanks

Mark.

Have you located the speaker spikes onto x head screws in your floor?  A mate at Naim did my SBLs like that many years ago and they sounded great. Now have SL 2,s on concrete floor but would do the above if the floor was a sprung wooden floor.

I reckon that the speakers would rock if placed on concrete slabs but you can only give it a try.

Good luck.

Mine are 10cm, and limited by my TQ Black. As I suggested, I might try swapping back to NACA5, or at least put some Naim plugs on the TQ.
