Best Etherne Cable- where to put?
Posted by: T38.45 on 11 October 2018
Try to take the next steps to streaming nirvana....
So I have ND555-----Router-----Roon/Sonicorbiter---NAS
Where would you put in the best cable here? Is one enough from ND555 to router? Or is this nonsense because of NAS and roon need better cable as well?
Thanks,
Ralf
Ralf , if it was possible I would plug the Nd555, Nas etc into a Ethernet switch, the switch is then connected to the router isolating everything from the multiple tasks the router performs. The best lead I would then connect from switch to nd555.
I'd try just the cable to the ND555 first. I believe the new streamers are designed in such a way as to mitigate the effect of upstream cables, switches, routers, etc. so maybe there is no need. No harm in trying, though - you can normally buy expensive 'audiophile' cables on a trial basis. I would also try some regular, cheap but certified Cat5e cables, as these might give different and/or better results too.
ok , so 1) all to switch 2) ND555 cable first- sounds like a plan! Thanks:-)
There have been lots of threads on this, but try getting hold of a used Cisco 2960 8TC-L switch. For the £50 I paid it made more of a difference than my £300 AudioQuest Vodka ethernet cable.
wow, that's a statement hungryhalibut!!!! Does this work as well?:
CISCO Catalyst 2960-7 Switch 7x 10/100/1000BaseTX RJ-45
....got it- just order your recommended model on the bay ..under 50bucks!
hope it is plug&play:-) thanks!!
Bargain. The nice thing about them is the IEC mains socket on the back, so no need for a wall wart. If it’s been reset it’s plug and play. If not, there is a simple procedure to reset it. I’ll be interested to hear how you get along with it. Put some little rubber feet underneath to keep it off the floor and to stop it overheating. Mine lives under the sideboard.
I'll give you some feedback as soon it's here....bay says next 5days
HH is right, I gave up on the fancy Ethernet cables after the Cisco switch and just use a relatively cheap £50 Melco cable. But cheaper may be fine too.
thanks...I LOVE this forum:-)
I have a Chord Aray, CISCO 2960 and Miecord and that is the order i would place them in terms of sonic improvement, the CISCO and Miecord are quite subtle, the Chord is pretty major.
Best way is demo, dealers do carry some cables (Chord and AQ) for home loan if you find a £5 Amazon one works for you, then cool.
Given you have an ND555 would be interesting given Naim apparently making it less sensitive or not required.

Ask the seller if it has been reset to factory defaults. Most have, but if you get one that hasn't, it may not work until you have logged into it via the console, which is not straightforward.
I really recommend the AQVOX AQ-SWITCH V1 with a good ethernet cabel. Will blow you out of the water.
Would be interesting to compare to the cisco 2960....

Chris - I had problems with the Cisco switch I got hold of, and I suspect it needs a proper factory reset. Can you post details of how to log into via the console? (I'm not sure I truly undestand what is meant by 'the console' either.) Web searches suggest there's some sort of reset to be done by holding various combinations of buttons etc. but these didn't seem to help me. Thanks
They’re have a 30 days money back guarantee, so Just try the AQVOX AQ-SWITCH V1

I have only had to do this once, and to be honest, it took me several attempts, a bit of head scratching, and trawling the net for info. You need a special console cable, which connects your computer to the console port on your switch. Then you log in via the command line. On a Mac, I used the free trial version of SecureCRT for this.
A Google search will reveal lots of information on how to do this, for example: https://www.petri.com/forums/f...0-to-factory-default
There are some more IT literate people than me on the forum, who would be better at explaining this stuff that I would be. Good luck!!
My experiment with Ethernet cables...

More expensive does not equate to better.
Different cables work better with different systems, or with the same system when it's put into a different environment.
It's completely unpredictable, you have to just test a selection and listen to the system.

Google the following for a guide to setting up:
Catalyst 2960 Switch Getting Started Guide ( 8- Port Switches), February 2008.
I bought two Cisco 296O on recommendations on here made no difference to my atom or other non Naim setup than running direct from my router or the cheaper switches I had.
Thanks! I contacted the bay seller, he said he‘ll do a full factory reset of the switch...with that , I‘ll guess just have to plug NAS , roon, ND555 and router in the switch ports 1-4...

That should save you a lot of head scratching!
Any of the regular ports will do, just connect the cables and you're done.
