Adding Chord Sarum Tuned Array to 552 500 system
Posted by: Consciousmess on 12 October 2018
I’ve just done the above and I’m gobsmacked as to the veil lifted again! Buying leads second hand is such a vfm upgrade and I’m tempted to say the lift in performance from standard in the box Naim leads to the Chord Sarum is like a 252 to a 552 - there’s just such a quiet noise floor and instruments linger and gain further punch.
Im inclined to wonder if this makes a 552 500 like a Statement with standard leads???!
Which cables did you change?
Are these Din/XLRs? Anyway, I’d have to agree with you; it’s surprising how much more is available from a 552/500DR set up with a set in place.
Between the 552 and the 500... a sublime experience. But then I went and listened to ATC active speakers... out went the NAP500 and the Sarum TA, so it might be my ex pair that you now have. If so, please enjoy
Maybe it is RJStaines, so thanks - possibly!
Im just amazed as the emotional engagement is uplifted, hearing texture in voices and emotion that only a truely sincere artist can portray. I’m not a Nirvana fan but the album live in NewYork, where did you sleep last night expresses Cobaines fragility.
And here’s something else. I often read some Naim posts and wonder why people praise 14.1 16 bit in 1950s/1960s/70s recordings, as technology really was comparatively dire. But the ambience of THEN is what one hears and that authenticity is something else.

Indeed.. you know I would not be surprised if the new product offerings we saw from Naim were some sort of active speaker to be designed to connected to the NACs.. the improvement this approach (with very short speaker leads, dedicated optimised speaker coupled amps, active crossovers etc) can be fantastic.

I know speculation is frivolous but it is fun too. If you are right SiS, wouldn't active speakers be a real collaboration between Focal and Naim, Focal doing the speaker bit and Naim doing the power amplification bit?
Alert, Alert.......thread drift!
I am sure Naim have looked at this and threw it out for SQ reasons, their preference being to isolate as many parts of the audio reproduction chain as possible. I heard the Linn speakers with amp and dac combined......pretty awful.
More frivolous speculation ............ howzabout Naim make it a unique to Naim streamer/pre-to-speaker connection system so you have to have an all Naim system ............. I bet no one has thought of that before
My next move will be a streamer pre with actives, 99% sure to be ATC's. Only thing that's in the way at the moment is no 500 level streamer-pre.
Have to agree with Gazza on the Linn system, not impressed.
Back on to the thread I began with... (!)
Warming up of pre-existing cables. I saw a closed post written in 2015 where some joked about burning in burnt cables and others sincerely believed it happens - illusions/placebo effects aside. So I hope others may comment helpfully here. Does preloved cables need reburning in, IF it has not been used for a while and stored in a cold PO waiting room?
Essentially, it is the literal temperature that needs to increase to make it sound optimal?
(I've noticed some tracks have a bit too much overt treble with these revealing cables and I hope this tempers down.)

ive managed to get to a super Sarum full loom and they were pretty much all S/H
i found on average only a week or so was needed for them to settle

Thanks Lyndon
I’ve had a system need time to settle after I had the speakers on their sides to fit outriggers but I also added Herbies Gliders and it might have been those bedding in. It didn’t seem to matter that the system was unplugged for a couple of months, still improved in that time.
