Single Fraim stack vs. brain/brawn non-Fraim in 500 Series

Posted by: jodl on 14 October 2018

After upgrading on several positions - Superline/SC Dr, 552 Dr, 300 Dr into Kudos 707 - and demoing a 500 dr in near future, I´m wondering wether singel stack Fraim or non-Fraim brain/brawn would be a better solution. Turntable is on wall shelf, Superline is sitting on seperate LP-storage commode (on Fraim glass/ball-bearings).

Single stacked Fraim is between speakers, brain/brawn would be to the left of speakers, but two stack Fraim would need too much space, so the splitted rack would have to be more compact.

Any suggestions/insight welcome!

Best wishes,

Was at a Naim run demo recently where brains were on Fraim but brawn was on quadraspire.

Why the segregation? Mix them all up, me thinks!

As Fraim is 40mm wider than Quadraspire, is it not possible to move both speakers 80mm to the right? And why would the single stack Fraim go between the speakers rather than to the left?

Easiest would be to post a picture, if only I could...haven`t found it in FAQs?

Thanks for advise on posting a photo from my  Macbook...

hungryhalibut, the Fraim sits offcenter to the right between the speakers in an 30 cm recessed place/niche under the TT-Wall shelf. Neither to the left, not to the right of the speakers, there is sufficient place to put two Fraim-stacks. Besides, the TT-wallshelf is a given - I´m not going to move this, so the leads have to reach the Superline...

Ah! That looks super, I’d leave it as it is and stop thinking about it. Just enjoy it.

First, thanks for make my photo "visible".

Second, I also think it´s somewhat right like it is given the layout ot the room - and there would be even place to put a 500 there.  I´m looking forward to see how relevant is the synergy between 552 and 500.

Yes, it does look just right. I’m sure it sounds wonderful. It will be interesting to see what you make of the 500. I’ve always preferred the 300.

The 300 sounds lovely, even so more after I did the service and DR-ing. The Kudos 707 do produce a fair amount of bass and I wonder, if a 500 is able to ad some texture and tunefulness to the bass department?

The acclaimed transparency in the midband is another thing I like to hear in my system - if the 500 will deliver this, I will be intrigued.

I only heard a passive 552/500 (into DBLs) about 10 years ago and I remember it just sounded so wonderful.

On the other hand, it would be nice, if I prefer the 300 in my setup over the 500, cheaper for sure..and it sounds very nice as it is, indeed!

Phased mana in that spot. You can’t go wrong. The nap 500 warmed up and run In will be  astonishing I promise. It will be like a private concert.

Never heard one/seen one (phased mana) in flesh. What I read, I think it´s hard to audition and hard to install - well maybe too much hassle for me.

But thanks for the suggestion - one never knows...maybe in the future, with more time to spend on the physical side of our hobby - for now, I grab listening-time whenever I can..

Extremely low WAF and not easy to source I am afraid.

Looking at your profile your running naca5, it be worth experimenting with Super Lumina or try Chord or others as this could well add to what your looking for with texture and tunefulness to the bass department. Super Lumina did it for me and my 707's.  Your cable runs look short, could also save yourself a few £'s or delay the inevitable . Andy

Andy,

I tried Super Lumina speaker cables when 552 and Kudos were brand new and didn`t like them - albeit it was only a short demo. In some areas they were shining, but in my setup the "drive/bite" was compromised.

Do you run the SL speaker cables in a SL full loom and when did you get your 707s - I have mine since 3 months and they still changing/getting better.

Would like to try SL again, when the 500 (if staying after demoing in Dezember) is well run in. Also Chord would be interesting, but with speaker Cables from Chord, I don´t know the minimal length recommended for Chord Sarum or Music with a nap 300 or nap 500.

Besides: I demoed a Chord Sarum 4 to 5 pin between Superline/Supercap and 552 and also preferred the Naim standard interconnect in the end (BUT I heard what Sarum and Music Interconnects did in an BIG active Naim set up, and that was really impressive).

Jody,

Had mine about 4 months, they get a lot of play as I work from home so any opportunity I get they are playing some tunes. I did a brief demo at home with the SL and at dealers along with Sarum. It was all very brief but preferred the SL straight away. Also as I was getting a discount I thought I kill 2birds and get them run in together.

Only the last few weeks I changed from Hi-Line to SL, this was immediately better a much fuller richer sound. Only reservation I have is that the sound maybe not as open as the Hi-Line, I kept the Hi-Line so will swap it over in the coming weeks.

I'll look at a full loom, maybe next year along with looking at a ND555 and then take a long long break from buying any more kit.

Andy,

Interesting, you seem to like the fuller, richer sound of the SL over the Hi-line - I have not heard the Hi-line between Supercap/Superline and 552, but even my dealer told me that most people he knows preferred the standard interconnect to the Hi-line in a vinyl setup. Actually I´m looking for a more open sound...

Following my last post I swapped the Hi-Line back in and did a few comparison’s and my observations was like before, however about the 3rd time i swapped  them over I followed a tweak. This was mentioned before by other member’s, I moved the SL from side to side to center and removed about 1mm, made sure it was not touching floor or any power cable and wooh! At same time I knocked a ball bearing of the shelve the 555PS sits on and also had to reseat the PowerLine so no idea if this also had some affect.

Unbelievable diffrence and difficult to explain why but everything slotted together and such a major improvement over the Hi-Line It’s hard to imagine that a cable can have this affect.

So glad to this forum as without this I might not have never have heard what this cable is capable off. Full Loom follows shortly....
