Going separate
Posted by: nocker on 22 October 2018
I currently have an NDX into a Supernait2 into Kudos C20 speakers and am looking at a two stage move to separates 282 & 200
if I get the 282 first then can I use the SN as the amp? I know the option if I get the 200 first but have seen a decently priced pre loved 282
thank you
A SN cannot power a 282. To use the SN as a power amp, you'll need a power supply for the 282. Preferably a HiCap.
A NAP200 on the other hand has a return DC feed for a preamp. And the DR version has a very decent one at that.
Thank you for the reply. I will get the 200 DR first, then the 282 at a later date.
Agreed, that would be the easiest way to make the change (unless you want to buy a Hicap too).
Maybe an addition in the future!!
But....
282 + 200 will sound very similar to SN2... I would encourage that you audition this combo before commiting to a purchase.
The things start to get interesting once NAP 250 DR is in the equation (282 powered by a HiCAP).
Adam makes a very good point. When I owned my SN2, I borrowed from the dealer a 282 and 250.2 for a weekend. I used my HiCap on the 282. I did not hear nearly enough improvement to make me make the move. Fast forward to a few months ago . . . replaced the SN2 with 252/SuperCapDR/250DR and there definitely was a "wow."
Please listen to the 282/200 first, to be sure . . .
There are dc pins on the power amp in socket, are you sure it can’t power a pre?
What about adding a power supply to the NDX or even going NDX2?

The NDX2 + SN2 would make a rather nice combination.

I’m sure it would, although for an NDX1 owner, I’m not sure it’s the best use of £5.5k or whatever an NDX2 costs. I think I’d want a very generous trade-in offer to make that jump.
Ok so taking on board all of above comments what would be the first & second steps of upgrading if I keep the NDX/SN2. I don’t want to spend the money on an NDX2
I could imagine something along the lines....
Step 1: a power supply for the source - XPS DR or 555PS. From my experience NDX reacts well to a non-DR version of 555PS.
Step 2: Test a Hi-Cap DR on your SN2. Opinions are divided as to whether it improves SN2. I’m convinced it does.
Once the above are done / tested you could try the following:
* Source to SN2 interconnect
* Play around with speaker cables
* Test PowerLines
* Test a dedicated streaming cable for the NDX
But most important of them all...
Enjoy the music! The Why! (couldn’t resist borrowing that phrase from one of the forum members)
