Mono Recordings and Playback

Has anyone AB'd between say a SN2 and 282(mono setting). Is the mono setting necessary for true mono. I can hear a slight difference with mono LP's I have thru the 282 but the question arose from a discussion with a buddy with a SN2.

Thanks...

With a digital mono source, a mono facility on the preamp makes practically  no difference at all and isn’t needed. However, with a mono LP, the mono facility cancels out any vertical modulation noise and is pretty much vital for best mono LP playback.

I also find that the mono record facility very useful for calibrating separate Left and Right record level controls (such as on the Nak ZX-9).

Thank you Richard. Another puzzle solved but could you explain the record feature calibration you mentioned...Nak ZX-9??

I believe Richard is referring to a Nakamichi cassette deck, model ZX-9.

Sorry Mack, yes Clive is correct, I was referring to the Nakamichi ZX-9, although it could equally include any recorder that uses separate individual L+R recording level controls.
