Naim app on Android - Volume slider issue

Posted by: Naim_newbie on 23 October 2018

Hi,

I've already opened a support ticket for this, but I am curious if there are other people who experience the same issue?

Since a month or two, the volume slider in the Naim app always jumps back to the setting where it was when I opened the app. The volume on my Atom doesn't change with it, so the slider setting and the actual volume on the Atom are out of sync. I have to close and re-open the app to get the slider back in sync, but then that's the new setting where it will jump back to when I adjust the volume again.

I had hoped one of the past updates would have fixed that issue, but no luck.

I sometimes have what I call 'lag' when reopening the app especially after my phone has gone to sleep. Have you tried waiting a few seconds to see if the slider and volume control synchronise? Are you using the Atom WiFi or hard wired to network? I should add that I don't have an Atom so don't no for sure about the different options for connecting with your network. It's also possible that the app has got 'scrambled', try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Rich

It’s a shame that we even have the slider!

I used to have a Raumfeld Connector2. The app for this used a “virtual” volume control knob within its display settings.  Spinning this with your finger seemed easier and more accurate than using a slider.

Best would be if you could just use the iPhone volume buttons, but I think this is restricted/prevented by apple

I’m not a fan of the volume slider either. I prefer the +/- control that the Classic Naim separates use. Also I have had similar issues to you using an iPhone, where the volume control doesn’t see the actual volume level straight away.

Using phone volume buttons is possible with some sources, particularly Airplay and Chromecast, but they are sometimes very poorly implemented, and that is unfortunately out of Naim’s control.

Despite Yamaha Musiccast works always with the side volume slider.... I really miss this future..

Welp, I've reinstalled the app but it makes zero difference. Also, haven't heard a word from Naim support yet aside from the automatic reply.

I'd buy an inexpensive iPad (deals abound on slightly older models, or referb direct from Apple) and just be done with it.  But I understand that is sacrilegious to some.

I disabled the volume on the phone (android). One day the SN2 volume kept increasing and I had to do a quick dive across the room to keep the volume at a steady level while I managed the phone with the other hand. Couldn't even use the mute on the SN2 as the volume kept increasing. Certainly the resulting panic didn't help. Once is enough for me.

Yep, I know that problem, though using different kit.  The volume dial on my SN2 was beyond 2 o'clock by the time I realised what was happening and managed to get to it.  I expected to see two woofer shaped holes in the back of the sofa afterwards, but luckily all was well.  At this point I decided that the current generation of smart-phones are dumb enough that they cannot be left in charge of the volume control.

I had the same problem for a few months a couple years back. Volume on slider would always magically snap back to a position.

It just went away eventually after a few app updates. I'd sometimes borrow the iPod touch from the main system (used purely as a remote) since it never had this problem.

I never had the free time required to troubleshoot it in detail and figure out what fixed the problem.

I far prefer my Android devices as devices. Yet the quality of the Naim app is very different on the two platforms. Android Naim app is still riddled with bugs and has no Rovi. To that end, I consider the use of iOS devices as a sort of tax on using Naim and just factored in the cost of the cheapest iPod Touch when buying my NDX.

I'd give Naim a call, far quicker than other methods.

Update:

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one...

Today I was moving stuff around in our living room while experimenting with speaker placement (new speakers). I had unplugged the Atom because I was moving the cabinet where it's sitting. I plugged it back in, switched it on and started playing songs with the app. It took three songs before I realized the volume slider in the app was behaving normally again.

I am very curious what to make of this. Apparently, it's not "just" the android app, but also there's something happening in the interaction between the app and the Atom software. Also, how long will it take before the erratic behavior is back?
