NDX Front USB won't read iPhone 6s or USB Stick (Fat32)

Posted by: GMHR on 28 October 2018

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but I can't find any info on it.

I have an NDX powered by an XPS2 power supply.

Everything works fine regarding music, Tidal etc.

The problem I have is the front usb won't read anything I put in it, I have checked the input settings under USB/Iphone and they are all correct.

The funny thing is when I connect the phone a message appears on the phone screen saying please sign in to connect the device, but after I put in my password there is nothing happening on the ndx, still just says NO DEVICE.

Has anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance

Can you check if the front USB input is ‘enabled’ via Settings (wrench icon on the remote)?

Yes check you have USB enabled via the spanner button on the remote as above ... I have no problem using FAT32 USB with my NDX front socket here... further via the Naim app I can navigate around the USB directory and file structure.

Thanks for your reply’s. the usb socket is enabled in input settings, but still says no device with both phone and usb stick? Very strange

Seems like there is something odd going on with that sign-in message you’re seeing. Have you tried restarting both NDX and phone?

You don't say what IOS version you are on but IOS 12 by default locks access to data over the lightning port and you have to change that in settings if you want it to work however long it is since your lockcode was last entered. You can easily google instructions on how to do this if you need to.

Would be worth trying another USB stick too (of a different type) as occasionally a particular brand/size won't work in the Naim USB socket for no obvious reason.

I assume enabling & disabling USB in the NDX front panel display using the remote "tools"  shows the USB icon (enabled) & does not show the USB icon (disabled) on the iPhone.   And that enabling & disabling USB in iPhone settings has the same linked reaction in the NDX settings display ???      If so I suspect it needs a trip to the repair man,  a good chance it might be as simple as a loose connection.

Thanks for all your advice, I have done what you suggested but stil nothing, I think it is time to get it looked at, and repaired!... thanks again, George

I recently got an NDX 2. The Naim dealer installing it couldn't get my external hard drive (loaded with lots of rips) to work in either USB slot. This despite the drive having just been taken from a Uniti Star I upgraded from with which it worked with no problems.

Fortunately I had another external drive which we resorted to and the problem was solved. Have you tried alternative as Dave Hendon has suggested?

Hi, I have now tried about four different drives, the strange thing is some flash showing they are getting poor while others don't. They are all FAT32. Cant get the iPhone 6s 128gb to do anything, not charging etc.

It seems there is power but nothing else?

What IOS version is your iPhone 6S on? If it's IOS 12 or 12.0.1 then read my earlier posting in this thread.

Hi David, Ive tried changing the usb setting in 12.0.1 and it hasn't made a difference in this case. Still scratching my head....

My dealer set up a hard drive for my star. He set it up in Apple's operating system. When after the install I tried to use an android device (which I'd said I was going to use) to run the Naim app the result was it couldn't "see" the files in the attached drive. So I used the app via an ipad. This worked perfectly.

So quite possibly you have the same problem but the other way around

Hmm I'm not familiar with IOS 12 yet, but have you tried restarting your iPhone and using the code after a restart? That ought to give you access to the lightning connector regardless of the setting.
