MOJAVE: anyone having any issues with new OS upgrade?

Posted by: Tony2011 on 29 October 2018

Has anyone had any major issues updating to the new Mojave OS? I have read reviews of people losing files and apps and that has made me think twice before going ahead with it. Not sure if Apple is still "beta" testing it  before releasing the final version. Please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Been running here on my MacBook Pro with no issues for a couple of days.

Can't so far see that there's much new that I'll use, though the "stacks" option does tidy up the desktop somewhat.

Thank you, Dave.

I updated my MacBook Pro to Mojave shortly after it was released. No problems at all. MacBook seems to run a bit quicker and cooler but apart from the home screen I've not really noticed any difference is how the apps work.

FYI I have a late 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro 500 gb and 8 gbRAM and have been advised that with/after High Sierra my unit is essentially no longer capable of handling Mac 0S releases.  It took 3 days of working with Mac by phone to get High Sierra loaded properly.  My i and o keys are so random I have to cut and paste daily.  Keys and keyboards no longer available.  My unit is obsolete but I will nurse along as is until it (or I) dies.

Well, I was ready to upgrade until Jeff put the creepers on me. Mine is a 2015 MBP and I never had any issues before  with other OSs. I think I’m going to have a go at it and see what happens. Thank you all.

Hi again, Tony,

If you have a MacBook Pro from mid 2012 or newer, you should be fine with the new OS.

Rather than visit the App Store, where the info is a bit thin on the ground, have a look instead at the Apple page showing Mojave, and under "How to Upgrade" there's a list of the various MacBook vintages which can use the new OS.

I suspect that some of the folks having problems have blindly installed it via the App Store, on older machines.

Great stuff. Thanks again, Dave.

It's also well worth doing some hardware upgrades on older MacBook Pros.  My own MBP is from 2013 and upping the Ram and fitting a 1TB SSD has totally transformed it.  Crucial offer kits and full instructions for doing the upgrade yourself. It was very straightforward and took me no more than 15 minutes to do the physical stuff, including a long overdue clean out of the internals (make sure you have an antistatic strap fitted when you do this).

Well, typing this from a newly upgraded MBP and not much difference on the surface but seems faster than previous versions. Will explore more...

Many thanks.

Running it on my both MacBooks (pricate 2015 and work 2018 models) - no problems so far.

I've been using it since release on a Mid-2014 MBP 15" and haven't come across any issues yet.

installing 'as we speak' -- my MBP is fairly new -- nought last year - so hopefully no drama...

I am surprised how quick and easy it was to download, i'm very untechy at configuring putters. Broadband speed is slightly faster than it used to be around here but the local means still remain privative.

MBP seems quicker now, no bad issues to report.

The Dark Mode is nice - i'm hoping it will ease eyestrain : )

I upgraded my  new-ish iMac with no problems but I have started getting messages saying that my antique 32-bit Excel is incompatible with the 64-bit system, I assume this is the Mojave upgrade.  Excel still works though.

I do find it slightly annoying that apps I close remain in the dock - if I wanted them in the dock I’d put them there - and it doesn’t seem that you can turn this ‘improvement’ off.  Mind you, there are worse things happening in the world ????

Not as keen on dark mode as others, but you don’t have to have it.

Not sure about performance as the SSD is instant rather than quick, so not easy to tell.

I do though rather fancy the iPad Pro... ????

Tony, you can turn the apps that remain in the dock off in System Preferences-Dock-untick Show recent apps in dock.

It bugged me for a while too!

Well, I did the upgrade a few days ago, and now my Mail Account (using the Mac supplied one) has decided to not download any new emails.  Checked with BT online and my mail is certainly there on their website, but Mail isn't downloading it.   Looked up solutions on the net, and deleted the account from mail, but now it won't log back into it!

Have tried 2 approaches so far

1. Add other : entered my email address and pw, but just get an hourglass

2. Set a BT Yahoo account (can still do this, apparently!) accepted my details.  The account appears in Mail, but no mail at all (old or new downloaded.

Well, looks like I'll have to do a bit of head scratching to get at my email again, or just give up and access it via the BT website.

I've tried every trick I can think of : deleting account/ reboot/ add account ; clearing the app saved data files etc - although I can't seem to find any of the 'envelopes' in Finder Library.  (Yes, I did use the 'search function' while in the Library).  Nothing seems to work.

So for the moment I'm stuck with accessing my BT mail using the web browser interface, which is a real PITA as you have to type in your password EVERY time.

I went through this nonsense before when I moved to High Sierra.  Perhaps it's time to give up on Apple Mail and use a third party email client, preferably free, although I might give Airmail 3 some consideration.  (sigh)

I'm receiving emails okay, but just noticed i can't send emails (?)

"Trying to log in to the SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct"

Trying to send responds with an annoying dropdown window requesting a password, but the only passwords i have don't work.

However, if i change my username to one of my alter email address it sends okay, just doesn't work on the default email address.

Not sure if this hiccup was caused by downloading Mojave or a BT issue (?)

I have to use word/excel/outlook on my Mac and MacBook Pro for work. Has anyone had any difficulties with mojave upgrade and these?

Thanks
