ND555

Posted by: JMB on 03 November 2018

Apologies if this is a daft question but I am new to streaming. I exchanged my CD555 for the new ND555 after a demo which convinced me of the sound improvement the ND555 delivered.

I have the Melco D100 CD ripper and a Melco server. My question is, can this set up also be used to play CDs ??  It seems to me that all the components are present but how to connect together to play CDs ?   I would just like the option.

The rest of my system is 552/50 into Spendor 200.

Thanks

Melco ripper as CD player —Melco——usb out —usb/spdif converter——ND555 coax in

Recommend as usb/spdif shiit eitr....but not 100% sure IF Melco ripper csn be used as CD player (they say it works on their web....)

T 38, thanks for being helpful but I am not familiar with the shilt eitr.  I suppose I am asking if the ND555 can be used as a DAC into which the output of the Melco ripper could be connected.  I did try this using USB interconnects but it did not work so I assume I am doing something wrong.  I will look up usb/spdif converters.

Nothing is simple in digital audio as I am discovering.

JMB,

You can't connect the Melco directly into the ND555 USB input.

As T38 said, you have to connect it to the ND555's S/PDIF input.

In order to connect the Meclo to the S/PDIF input you need a USB-to-S/PDIF converter.

[MELCO USB output]-------(USB to S/PDIF Converter)------[ND555 S/PDIF input]

Why bother to 'play' CD's,  you've got the Melco ripper,  just get it rippering

Quite.

I suppose you've got the issue if a friend pops around with a CD he/she wants you to listen to. I'd just rip it, make a cup of tea and then it'll be ready for you in the library rather than faffing about with USB / S/PDIF converters.

When friend leaves, delete CD from Melco library.

Sorted

Yes its a problem if someone brings a CD to listen too,  but I can rip a CD on my laptop straight into the NAS before the kettle has boiled.  I would hope the Melco ripper & server could do that a lot quicker.   But just in case the friend pops in to listen to what you've got,  its all the more reason to extract the ripper digit.

I haven't figured out how to delete stuff from my NAS - honest.

Yup, you are both right but I would like the option to play a CD.

Thanks Tomser.
