New speakers advice
Posted by: ursus262 on 10 November 2018
In a few weeks' time we will be reconfiguring our sitting room, meaning that my much loved Monitor Audio RS6s will need to be sighted close to the wall. Being rear ported, this won't work well as they will lose the bass response that I love so much - really taught and accurate and deep at the same time.
I am now looking for speakers that have a front port, that work close to a wall, and have superb bass response. Considered the Kralk Audio TDB series of speakers. I would be grateful for any suggestions about what I could audition. Either standmount or compact floorstanders are fine - the RS6s are compact floorstanders.

Or keep the MAs and use a sub.
Have a look at some used PMC twenty.23s. They will work with about 5” behind them at the top.

I've always like transmission line speakers. I used to have a pair of TDL RTL2s and I loved them. Might audition a pair. Thank you for the suggestion.
Taught = taut. Sorry!

No problem, just stand in front of them with a conductor's wand and teach them how to play bass!
Back against the wall will need a solid wall, have you such?
Assuming yes that takes you to used Naim, probably SL2 is the best bet but not a cert, chap I know can’t get them to work on is floor so stayed with SBLs (he’s installed plenty for others though). Recently he's replaced the SBLs with Audionote Es (another back o the wall design) but he does run the local AudioT which has just taken on that franchise. I’ve been impressed with the Es sound and particularly their scale but not their looks so much. Wilson Duette 2s were flagged up not so long ago by one Adam Meredith as a boundary speaker he could live with, not heard them myself. Larsens also go back against the wall. I’ll be keeping my NBLs but those last three are on my what if list along with Eclipse and MBL120s which need more space but are intriguing.

......... Audionote Es (another back o the wall design) .......
But aren't these rear-ported?
They are, but nonetheless they are designed to be used in corners or close to the wall.
When mentioning the PMCs I was conscious that you may not want to spend too much, and that the Uniti is not the strongest source. With more illustrious speakers a source upgrade becomes pretty well obligatory. That said, even with the PMCs a swap from the Uniti to say a 272 would be a very good idea.

I did have the Uniti upgraded with the 24-bit DAC. I also use the CD drive frequently. To be honest, I'm really happy with it and it works with the NAP250DR really well. I'm happy with the sound that comes out, let's put it that way. I think I'll audition a pair of PMCs. Incidentally, they used to make them in Luton, where I come from.
Exactly the same criteria as me and auditioned PRoAc d20r. PMC 25 23, The new Spendor A7 and last but not least Totem Sky towers!
I today ordered the Sky towers. Rear ported but designed to work 6” from a rear wall.
Blew all the others away, I auditioned everything expecting the PMC’s to be the best but the Totems are incredible and I genuinely don’t know how they do it as they are physically half the size of the others and went the lowest but were also the tightest!
if you can, definitely try have a listen.
Oh, I also wanted to mention that the Uniti powers my stageline. I don't think the 272 can do that.
Try the Proac Tablette 10 on a high mass rigid stand. It’s a superb loudspeaker.

Same here - bass with no equal, or at least, none I’ve heard, (IMF TLS50 then their RSPM now PMC EB1i) And secondhand certainly extends the budget...
