Creating playlists
Posted by: Plant Pot on 10 November 2018
Hello,
I have given up on the Naim app for creating playlists as they seem to get jumbled up with time.
I‘ve tried to researching how to create a playlist in Assett (on a QNap Nas) but without success. I know it involves m3u files and I think I need some application to create them (on a Mac).
Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of an idiots guide or suitable application?
MAny thanks,
Matthew
Sorry, I can't help you as I don't use Asset. It's unfortunate that Naim app playlists are so unreliable, which has been the case since it was first released. One thing I like about the Unitiserve is that I can create playlists on the N-Serve app and they immediately become available on the Naim app. They are also reliable, and easily backed up and restored.
We have many playlists using the Naim app and Core and have, touch wood, no problems. We use both Android and iPad to make and use them. Each list has its own name. Rich

The Core section of the Naim app is not the same as the streamer section in this respect. As I understand it, the playlists are stored on the Core in this case, as they are on the Unitiserve using N-Serve. The problems seem to arise when you create playlists using a streamer, when they are stored on the app.
I have a 272 with the Core. I've used both rooms to make play lists. May be I'm just lucky or are there other factors at work? Rich
I use the Playlist Creator software on my pc to create the playlist files on my QNAP. You simply need to tell Asset where to find them. Once you know the correct format required by the files, it’s easy to set them up. I’ve no idea whether there’s a Mac version.
Thanks for the replies. I am getting somewhere with it. I’ve formed a playlist and can see the songs (albeit in a clunky file address format).
I cant get them to play yet but I’ll keep playing with it.
Thanks for taking the time.
Cheers,
Matthew

It all seems pretty hit and miss in my experience. Playlists seem to be fine for days, weeks or months, then for no obvious reason, either individual tracks of whole lists will not play. So now I store them on the server instead, and that works fine. The advantage of the Unitiserve and Core is that you have an app on which to create playlists, so you can do it quite spontaneously, whereas some setups would require you to fire up a computer.
Hi Matthew
I use Windows notepad to create playlists as text files before then saving them with a m3u file extension.
With a Mac you would use their text editor but I believe you need to amend the propertes to edit as plain text before saving them as m3u pllaylist files. Also note that the QNAP (Linux) uses the forward slash for its directory separator and each line should start with ‘/share’ which denotes the name of the volume on which your files are stored on your QNAP NAS.
Below is an example of a few tracks from a compilation of Colin Blunstone tracks I created from several ripped CDs
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Colin Blunstone/Ennismore/01 - I Don't Believe In Miracles.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Colin Blunstone/One Year/04 - Caroline Goodbye.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Colin Blunstone/Ennismore/02 - Exclusively For Me.flac
/share/Multimedia/Music/CD Music/A to E/Colin Blunstone/One Year/02 - Misty Roses.flac
I hope this helps
Steve
Thanks Steve,
That’s very useful. I’ll check text I have (which doesn’t work) and see how it compares.
Cheers,
Matthew
One last point. I keep all my playlists together in a separate folder on my QNAP Nas which I've configured Asset to monitor in the "Watched playlist folders" section.
