Question about 282 using a supernait as power amp.

Posted by: drawtheline55 on 19 November 2018

Hello, I have seen some posts on this and I know it may be a little funky, but currently using a supernait.hicapdr into B&W

bookshelf speakers, sounds very nice. I have a 282 coming in about a yr old and want to use the power amp section of the supernait.

I assume I go out of the 282 into the hicapdr and out of the hicapdr into the power amp in on the supernait.

If this is wrong please correct me. My other question is....someone posted this

"You would need a hicap for the 282. At this price I would get the SN and later upgrade with hicap and 250.2, then swap the SN for a 282. Power output between SN and 200 is about the same. If you go for 282 + SN, --------you could use the dac in SN."

If one uses the 282 as a pre and the supernait as a power amp how is it possible to use the dac in the supernait ??

Yes, correct.  You will power the NAC282 with the Hicap (via SNAIC5).  Then  take pre-amp signal from the Hicap to the Power amp section (Power Amp In) of the Supernait (via SNAIC4).

I don't know whether you all be able to use the DAC in the Supernait when it's being used just as a power amp. You could always try it and find out...

I would NOT expect the DAC inputs in the Supernait 1 to be available when you were using the only the amp stage of the Supernait as they are basically part of the pre-amp portion of the amp, but I would still encourage you to use the NAC 282 which is one of the magical Naim pre-amps.    When funds allow, I would sell or trade the Supernait for a dedicated Naim amp (200, 250, 300 etc.)   At the level of a 282/ Hi-Cap DR/ amp system you should look to add a dedicated DAC or streamer unless you are a committed CD user and have a CD player you love.

Good luck,

Bruce

Which bookshelve B&w's? Ive used the CM1's for a year with a Supernait 1 and I still think it is good combination.

Thanks for the replies and thanks to Richard for the confirmation of the hook up.

My "front ends" if you will are a Rega Rp6 with exact2 mm cart, Revox B77 and Akai gx275 reel to reel, I am happy with my cd players

One is a Linn Ikemi and the other is a Mcintosh 550 both work well with the Naim gear.

Probably will go with a 200 down the road, have multiple systems, have some older Linn electronics, Mcintosh, some tube gear

VTL 2.5 ( a bargain in tube pre amps) restored Dynaco st70.

The B&W speakers used in the naim system are  the CM2, nice speaker, really come alive with good gear.

Sellng the Supernait and buying a used 200 would cost very little, in fact you might end up with some cash to spare which you could put towards an external DAC.

... and really come alive when the volume is turned up. I've looked up your CM2s and what I found (in reviews) is that they look pretty similar to my CM1's - no real surprise. I always had the impression that the SN likes to work and that if the volume knob is around 10, everything just gels together. You probably recognize that. Unlimited Dynamics! Party time (all day)!

I paired my SN1 with a Nap 200 and a Hicap DR for a few months and I had increased tranparency, a more lean sound. The lean sound is a bit of a characteristic from the Nap 200 and if you are used to a SN1, it is quite different. The SN1 has a beefy, muscular sound and it is not said that you like the Nap 200. I do like it, by the way - but in a different context.

Can't comment on the 282. No experience.

I used a 202 with supernait power amp for a while while I looked for a good used 200. Worked fine, sounded great, looked odd

Not quite the same but I paired a nac82 with a Nait xs2 a while back ...and somehow it was never a happy combination...not sure why ..but was just better with the Xs2 and a hicap on its own ...ps a flatcap Xs2 added nothing to the Nait .. infact I thought it was thinner and weak sounding and was glad to remove it!

Yep, that is the magic of hi end audio....you never know until you get it home. If the 282 into the hicapdr into the supernait

clicks.......bingo. Would never sell the supernait to get a 200, would buy a 200 and compare them for sure, then decide.

But NEVER assume, gots to hear it.
