Loudspeaker selection

Posted by: HIFIQUEST on 20 November 2018

Hi Guys

Looking for some help in making a decision with loudspeakers that would complement my Naim equipment.

I have a Naim Nac N272 processor powered by a 250DR amplifier connected to NAC A5 speaker cables.

My list of speaker considerations are:

1) Spendor D9

2) Proac D48r

3) Focal 1038 be

My room size is 16’ wide. 26’deep. 8’high.

My music interest are varied and I do enjoy playing loud at times. I listened to the D7’s which sounded great but don’t think they will provide enough bass for the room size.

Any recommendations or experience with the above would  be appreciated.

If you are spending that sort of money on speakers I’d make sure that an XPS DR or, better, a 555PS DR follow close behind.

Dynaudio goes well with Naim.

I have Focal 1038be in a larger  room than yours- driven by cds2/01/52/135s

works well, fairly easy to drive, ample bass-good looks

havent heard the other speakers u mentioned

Thanks Dave.

They are a good looking speaker! The specs align with what I am looking for as far as sensitivity and capability for my room. Haven't had the opportunity to demo them yet. The Beryllium tweeter is something I'm anxious to hear.

I have my 1038’s out into the room- about 5 ft from rear wall - the room is 30’ x 20’ and I have them firing down the long way.  This way there is a lot of depth to the sound and bass is stronger this way.

I think you're on the right track with the sizes youre listing. Focal Kanta 2 or 3 would be good candidates to demo  if they're in budget, and maybe the largest of the new Sonus Faber Sonettos.

Q Acoustics concept 500 may be able to work in a room that size, and would leave you some money for the power supply that HH sensibly mentions. That would make sense since it's a large space to pressurise.

I haven't heard Kudos speakers but they are very highly regarded around here, and have some models large enough for your space. Others would have views on their suitability with your system.

I have to D48R & love them. So the 1 & 2 choice would be my starting point. Add the Kudos 606 and Wilson Benesch Vector and that would be the short list I would try first. As above, you are in the ball park room size wise with your choice of speakers, as I have almost the same room size as you with my D48R.

The only way to know for sure is to at least demo. these at dealers with the same or very simlilar gear as you then have a home demo. of the 1 or 2 you liked the most.

Just be aware that if a home demo. it not possible (in many parts of the world this is impossible to do) & that if a dealer demo. is the only way to listen to them then at least try and take your gear in to demo. them with.

Happy to discuss further if you end up liking the D48R and you are about to purchase - but have some specific questions prior to doing so.

ATC. They tell it like it is.

I'm  with HH, I would look at further improving the 272 source first ideally if you can 555 or at least XPSDR and get the most from 272

I would also listen to ATC in that mix and the new T505 Kudos Titans, in saying that the T606 are supberb

With respect to ATC, the OP room is pretty big. Not sure even the ATC SCM40 would suffice with a 250DR in the space required. Might need the active version in this size room (or a 300DR).

I use PMC 20 24 on the end of my 272 / 250DR. I also demo the new PMC speakers. Very good to my ears. Remember that speakers are a very personal choice, it's demo time! Rich

If you want deep and full bass, yet fast and accurate, try some PMCs. The higher up the range the better - I would only consider secondhand or ex-dem to maximise buying power. 20-26 or 25-26 OK, but bettered (by far) by Fact 12 (amazingly good sounding for such small looking speakers), even more so by MB2, a much more inposing speaker. Older EB1i is somewhere in between 20-26 and MB2

PMC Twenty5 26. ????

Thanks for the feedback on the PMC line. They look like a great loudspeaker but I have concerns with the lower sensitivity ratings and the 250dr being able to drive them properly for my room size.

The Nap250 dr is superb with PMC, I used with 25.26, no worries at all.

Okay thanks for the feedback Gazza. There is a dealer in my area. Will make a point of stopping in for a demo.

If I can give you one piece of advice regarding speakers it is that you MUST have a home demo.  What sounds amazing in one room can sound very different in another as I have found to my cost.

It's always good to get recommendations from the forum members here of what goes well with what as there is a ton of knowledge on here but I would imagine all of them would agree with me even though I am a newbie.

That is indeed the thing to do if at all possible. However a second best if that is not possible for any reason is to take your existing speakers, and amp if whoever is selling doesn’t have the same, to give you a reference point for comparison. I’ve done this, lugging huge IMF RSPMs into a couple of dealers’ demo rooms (or rather their staff did the lugging), and in someone’s private house - at that level of gear people understand and are willing to favilitate.
