LP12: upgrade with downgrade?

Posted by: Matteo on 27 November 2018

In the past I found that the current (black) T-Kable (€ 390), supplied as standard with the EKOS SE arm and considered an upgrade by Linn for the other arms, was really a downgrade, compared to the old (grey) T-Kable (€ 300, supplied as standard with the last Akito arms).

Considering that my LP12 sits on a wall shelf, in the next few months I would also try to downgrade from Trampolin 2 to the last solid base. According to the Linn website:

"The Solid Base provides a fixed, rigid platform for your deck and comes as standard on our introductory level Majik LP12 turntable. If your turntable is placed on a cabinet or shelf that provides its own isolation from vibrations, then this is the perfect base board for you. Alternatively, choose the Trampolin base board to benefit from the integrated vibration isolation this provides to the LP12. Manufactured from high quality aluminium and fixed directly to the wooden plinth of the turntable, the Solid Base can be specified on all new Sondek LP12 turntables and can also be used to upgrade your existing Sondek LP12 if it has an older non-aluminium base".

It seems that the only difference between the Trampolin 2 (€ 220) and the current solid base (€ 170) are the feet, as the price difference could suggest.

A couple of years ago, I also upgraded from the Lingo 3 (€ 1,500) to the (Akurate) Radikal (€ 3,600), and always felt that the Lingo had a better Vfm, considerirng the price difference (more than 2,000 €). But this is another story.

Have you had the same (or others) experiences with your LP12 of downgrade/upgrade?

I ‘downgraded’ and sold my LP12SE (with Urika) and bought a Well Tempered Versalex earlier this year. Best upgrade I’ve ever made.

The more I went down the upgrade path the less I enjoyed the LP12. Not knocking you or anyone who owns one…I’ve just seen the light. Laffin!

Matteo have you considered "upgrading" to no base at all

As in remove the base and put on feet or spikes in the corners only

I found a base of any kind ... And I tried everything from original hardboard through perspex to trampoline 2 ... Absolutely killed the dynamics of the deck ...and it felt shut in and flat

The only reason ( I feel) that linn fit a base is for "safety" and iif you can live with that ...try it

With three kids in the house I guess I can't ...

I need to find the less worse base ...
