Improvements you would like to see from Naim in 2019

Posted by: Camlan on 31 December 2018

To start the ball rolling, I would love to see bubbleupnp integration in either the app or the servers to save using Lumin/Kazoo to access Qobuz.

I don't use the remotes either! Personally I don't find it a hardship to walk the 5 yards across the room and press the buttons/twist the knob on the front of the system. It's easy enough to scroll through albums or artists via the display on the NDX.

But still much easier to scroll through albums or artists using a decent control app such as the Naim app or Linn Kazoo. Even more so if you have a reasonably large music collection.

I've changed my mind. Rather than an updated 272, I would like an updated high end integrated amp that would partner the NDX2. Think SN3 with the Uniti volume control and nothing else - all operated through the NDX2 and Naim app. A higher end version of the Nova with the same styling, but more grip and depth. Would be an awesome 2 box solution, and the market has a demand for high end with low box counts. I'm happy to be involved with the design and testing.

Please no!! No more products where you have to use an 'app' to do anything. I notice the new NDS5XS is controlled only using an 'app' :-( Only app control is the reason I didn't buy Mu-So for the kitchen - went the Roberts route.... okay not there musically but at least it has buttons on it! Why does everything have to be done through a phone nowadays? :-(

Simply because it offers convenience and flexibility that a remote cannot hope to match.

I have an iPad that I use almost exclusively with ‘apps’ as a front end for most of my audio systems, but it could just as easily be an android tablet or phone. I don’t think I have ever used the supplied remote with any of my streaming devices - Naim, Linn or Marantz.

These streaming devices offer superb user experiences with their accompanying apps, way above that offered by remote controlled CD players or cassettes of the past. Why would you choose to limit your flexibility by reverting back to an old fashioned and limited remote control?

I understand that solwisesteve is just arguing against systems that can be controlled exclusively via apps running on mobile devices, not asking to limit their flexibility in any way.

I might have misunderstood your point, but I do not see anything wrong with the idea that a system should be controllable in different ways: through manual controls on the device, on remote controls, via applications running on mobile devices, laptops, etc.

The availability of manual controls can make systems more usable and less vulnerable to software errors (both in the device and in the control app) and to failures of routers, switches, mobile devices, remote controls, etc.

Agreed... if people want to use their phone to turn the volume up/down then fine BUT I also want the option of a proper volume control. tbh I can take or leave the idea of the remote control. Both of mine are still in the bubble wrap bags in the draw not used!

It would be difficult to browse my music without a control interface like an iThing. If you could get that kind of functionality on a remote, it would be a big remote. Nice though it looks, I don't think the app is particularly good, but it is mostly good enough.

My streaming started with an HDX touch screen and remote. That was laborious. In no time I had it hooked up to my telly so that I could sit on the sofa and browse, as opposed to standing in front of it, squinting and jabbing. With the ND555 I have reached a nice half and half point. I set up, queue and deploy what I want to listen to, then flip the iThing shut and use the superb remote that comes with the ND555 (and IIRC, the NDX2 also) for playback and volume. Lovely.

In the old Uniti System (Uniti2) you can use the remote or the app or the buttons on the front

as one likes. In the new Uniti System you can mainly use the app. Thats for me a step bachwards.

I’d like to see Muso and Qb be certified Roon Endpoints—not just via airplay.

Having an interest in whole home audio, I’d like to see Naim produce a Roon ready, rack mountable streamer like NAD’s CI720.

Dac2.  I bought a Core this year and use it straight into a Chord Mojo via a DC1 cable.  Sound is amazing.  That said - sound with a Naim Dac would even be better...but it is time for a successor to the Dac1.  Mojo won't last forever...runs on a battery...

Just to clarify my previous post, i would like to see an nDac2.

I don't have new ND series network player, but on web page I saw:

  • Thanks to RC5 system integration, you can control compatible amplifiers that are connected to your network player directly from the Naim app on a phone or tablet.

Does this mean using Naim app can control some functions on Naim preamplifiers through ND network player? You still have all: app, remote and buttons on preamplifier.

For personal wish list:

  • Mu-so: better WiFi capability beyond 48Khz and Chromecast built-in like new Uniti and ND series.
  • Stream transport without DAC like LUMIN U1 or dCS Network Bridge.
  • And yes, new DAC please.

My suggestions:

  • Possibility to easily enable (as well as disable) volume levelling (normalisation) for the play queue so that the differences in recorded loudness level of different tracks are less significant during playback. (And please use the album loudness level as the reference rather than track loudness level)
  • Improved method of locating Internet radio stations and podcasts; finding a radio station or a podcast by location only is a pain in the neck, especially if you are looking for a North American one, and you do not know whether the radio station is Canadian or American, nor which state. (Probably a V-tuner issue ....)

Hello,

for the uniti range (including my Nova). I would like to have full access to old firmware an the ability to change it easily.

I would also consider the option to turn off the screen after xx seconds and to choose the informations on the screen (title+duration or cover or information or schedule etc)

It would be a good improvement to have the possibility to turn down the amplification section when using an external power amp (like older uniti range)

Yes, with System Automation set up, you can use the Naim app, and the streamer remote to control the preamp and other sources. It does not disable the preamp remote or buttons, you can continue to use either.

Fix Spotify shuffle in the Spotify connect implementation on the Uniti Atom

Posted on: 05 January 2019 by HiFiman

After a decade an app that works and quicker fixes not months until the next so called stable release.

Update to the 272 with no power supply that requires an external XPS/555 with new streaming platform and the best pre Naim can squeeze into the space left by removing the transformer.

An overhaul of the n-Serve app.

Facilitate editing of downloads via n-Serve.

Posted on: 05 January 2019 by Harry

If the downloads are FLAC it is possible,, although when we had the HDX, re tagging HDX ripped files (let alone non HDX ripped files) was  a hit and miss process.  If the downloads are WAV it won't be possible unless Naim adopt the same universal model used by everybody else. Don't hold your breath.

Not possible - even in flac -  using n-Serve and a UnitiServe. 'Edit Metadata' is greyed out.

The return of Connections magazine as a paper magazine. I have the feeling it had a worth far beyond the actual price per copy in communicating the values and style of the brand that we love.

It seems that Naim have done a very good job of isolating Ethernet issues on the way to the DAC in the new streamers. So a “network bridge” type product would interest me as I like to be agnostic from a DAC point of view but would like a Naim option to get to the DAC of my choice.

It’s called a router configured with specific forwarders/helpers, PIM and IGMP... a bridge will provide no Ethernet benefit at all.. but yes  ferrite chokes etc can be clamped onto Ethernet, and mains leads to impede common mode RF currents for when you are using low quality network equipment.

So you can do what you want now, but I suspect Naim won’t want to enter the market of network equipment .. players like HP and Cisco are prettybestablished there already...

I'd like to see a solution to the artwork freeze on the ND555. Although I have the display turned off most of the time, it seems pointless having a display screen if it doesn't show the correct image for the album playing. I realise it can be fixed by powering off and on again, but it shouldn't be like this on a £13,000 streamer.

I concur.

Not that it’s of any comfort, but I am experiencing artwork freeze on my Uniti Atom, too.

Appears to be occuring more often when using inputs like Spotify, Tidal and AirPlay, but I have yet to discover a repeatable pattern. With Internet radio and UPnP there can be weeks between the artwork freezes ...

Dear Naim

Please could you add a "Recently Added" category into the app so when I've ripped and uploaded new music to my NAS but don't have the immediate time to listen, I don't forget to listen in the future or worse, buy the album again forgetting I have it already.

That is a function of the UPNP server, not the app.

Asset already does this.

The Core also has this function through the Naim App.
