Dac V1
Posted by: John bqe on 05 January 2019
Hi all, be nice - 1st time writing on the forum, but been ‘reading topics’ for some time.
Purchased a Dac V1 some time ago, used with Mac mini/Audirvana, CD5i, 202/flatcap xs/napsc (will hicap when funds allow), 200 into ATC scm 11/2 (with goldring GR2/stageline - hence power supply).
If I switch power off on Dac V1 I lose the left channel until I unplug the din out plug, then plug it back in; all is then fine: any ideas as to why this is happening?
John
Odd, but not impossible. Most likely the current spike is tripping the power amp’s.
There is a reason for the switch off / switch on sequence (not killing the speakers being one of them of course)
Is the gear properly earthed via mains?
Hi Adam, many thanks for the teply. Yes all original naim mains cable/naim interconnects, in original condition, and it happened when I had it connected to my privious amp/speakers (155xs & dynaudio dm 2/7)
If that is the case, I’d have your DAC V1 looked at by Naim. In normal circumstances switching any component should not trip a power amp’s protection circuit.
I only managed to trip any of my amps once. It was my Olive NAP250, driving it hard into Quad ESL-63s (wide and wild impedance swings in those speakers). A 30 second reset (power off) solved it
Ahh, I think I’ve ‘mislead’ you - it’s the V1 that loses the left channel, all other inputs work fine ????
John - Welcome to the forum.
I'm slightly confused by your question - Do you mean that if you switch the V1 off and then switch it on again later, only the right channel works on the V1 until you unplug and replug the DIN plug on its output - it then works fine ?
Yes, that’s the problem - apologies ????
Ok understood - What input is the DAC V1 connected to on the 202. Does it do the same if you connect it to another input ? Are you using a standard Naim 4 - 5 pin interconnect between V1 and 202 ?
It’s connected to the CD input & still does it on other inputs, using a Chord clearway 4-5, but also tried with standard naim 4-5 & get the same result
Jon, possibly a poor connection somewhere, either at DIN plug on at sockets. Have tried a different input on the NAC202? If it still does it then you can rule out the DIN inout socket on the 202.
Ok thanks John - It's pointing the finger at the V1. Can you take it to a dealer and see if it does the same thing ? - If so then it's worth getting it looked at by Naim.
Out of interest, do you get the same issue when running the V1 straight into the 200. Connect it with the SNAIC 4 you usually use between the Flatcap and 200. Power off the 200 before switching off the V1 and power up after the V1 to stop switch on thumps.

Ok - clear now
Try and run your V1 in a pre-amp mode and hook it up straight to your NAP. See what happens.
Many thanks for the replies
I have tried it (V1 as pre), same result, also happens when I use my headphones in/on the V1, then remove them - then have to unplug/plug din lead to get left channel back(?)
Looks like service time for DAC V1. I’d remove it from your system today, before something else gets damaged...
Thank you all for your replies - looks like it’ll have to be serviced ????
