NetGear ReadyNAS Duo resync

Posted by: ken c on 04 September 2011

after a power cut while i was away, on switch on, the NAS (correctly) went into resync mode, but its been doing this now since 1500hrs yesterday! i have a 2x2TB in RAID config. is this normal? I guess the fact that i managed to play ripped music from it would suggest all is OK, but i am just a bit nervous. annoying that a UPS for it had been delivered while i was away and therefore not yet installed. damn!

any thoughts, advice,  gratefully received

ReadyNAS resyncs can take some time. Have a look at the Duo via your browser and you should see something in the staus messages and logs to help give you some assurance.

2TB of data is quite a lot to deal with and the whole disc will be checked whether there is data there or not.

Should be all right in the end...

Hi Ken - i've had this on my NV+. Took an age to resync but all was ok. Like yours, it had gone off during a power cut and so after that episode i bought a UPS.

Ken, do you have journaling enabled? That should quicken the re sync if there is a power interruption. It does slow performance slightly, but resync for my 2x1TB at 65% full takes about 10~15 mins.
As long as there is progress, albeit slow, on the status bar I would have thought you are ok.
Slightly curious though, when mine is resyncing, the NAS i seem to remember is not mountable, and you say you've copied files from it whilst resyncing?

thanks simon. no, i dont believe i have "journaling" enabled -- i dont know what this is and dont recall reading about it?

i havent actually  'copied files' from it while syncing as such. i have merely played some music from it via the US, and this played OK.

thanks for the reassurance james.

actually thinking about it now, i wonder whether a UPS really helps. if power goes off while i am away, the UPS will keep maintain backup power for an hour or so, then after that, no protection! unless there is a way to instruct the UPS to automatically  shut down the NAS gracefully when power goes off -- that would be neat. or am i simply missing the point.

wow! what a coincidence --  the resync just finished! message from my NAS

"RAID sync finished on volume C.  The volume is now fully redundant.

[Mon Sep  5 08:02:29 WEST 2011]"

Phew!

Thanks guys...

But would appreciate comments on what happens when power off while one is away for long. i guess the thing to do is to shut down the NAS?

Ken - the NAS is connected to the UPS via a serial cable and then instructs the NAS when its on battery power. When the battery drops below a certain level the NAS is instructed to shut down. It then stays off until i power it up again.

Cheers

another question: i also received this message from my NAS when i powered it up after the power failure:

"

Improper shutdown detected.

To ensure data integrity, a filesystem check should be performed as soon as possible.  In Frontview:

1. Click on the System button.
2. Go to the Shutdown tab.
3. Enable the volume scan on next boot checkbox.
4. Reboot the device.

"

Now that the resync has successfully completed, do i need to bother with this or did the resync take care of this as well?

many thanks

thanks James, my UPS is APL RS800. i dont see the any possibility to connect a serial cable (RS232) to the NAS as there are no compatible connection points on either side. or please explain further?

Hi Ken,

I have the ReadyNAS NV+ and it can be connected to a UPS via a USB or Serial cable to allow the UPS to provide status information to the NAS. Worth checking if your UPS can support this. In my case, if there is a power failure then the UPS can tell the NAS to start to shut down and its a controlled shut down so it doesn't need to do a full re scan on start up (and prevents possible corruption if there was a write operation occuring during an unforseen power off.

thanks james, looks very similar to mine, which is an 800, probably overkill. i guess i haven't read the provided manually thoroughly enough (consistent with 'when all else fails, read the manual') -- will do so soon, work allowing.
