Updating an old HDX
Posted by: andrew jameson on 08 September 2011
I have one of the first HDX's (with NDAC and 555PS) with 2 x 400gb drives and i'm nearly out of space (have 540 ish rips and only room for 30-40 more) - Any idea what my potential HD upgrade options are ... can one go to 2 x 1TB for example
Just curious as to how i might get this 3 year old player up to as near as poss latest spec
Apologies if this has been discussed a thousand times - I don't spend as much time here as i used to
Thanks
Andy
I understand your point but it is logically flawed - by the same token since your music and player are situated in one device if it experiences a problem you are without music - neither solution is invulnerable to breakdown except with the NAS/Server approach it is probably cheaper to fix once there is a problem.

This makes sense to me, I guess most of us will have all the orginal CD's of the albums ripped to their HDX still lying somewhere. It takes only an awful lot of time to rip all these albums again and fix things like cover art etc ...

With HDDs and SSD failure it's not a question of if. Although I would bet more money against early SSD failure generally. NAS box and included HDDs I can handle for maintenance, backup and disaster recovery. When my HDX goes down I don't want to have to depend on the factory to recover my ripped music.
The one box solution which doesn't depend on network connectivity is not the HDX. This is not what it was designed for or sold as. Streaming 16/44 WAV over WiFi is also not what the HDX was made or sold for. In fact it is discouraged - for obvious reasons. We can of course please ourselves and do as we like. But that's not Naim's problem. Not fit for purpose is an issue. Not bought for purpose isn't.

There is no reason the two drives couldn't be used in tandem to give 2x400 or 2x500Gb of storage. However, the current software isn't set up to do this and it's unlikely NAIM will update it to do so. I agree there is a small number of us that would/do prefer to keep all of the music stored locally on the HDX, but I think we are in the minority. In my case, 500Gb should more than see me and my 350 CD collection into the grave!

I fully agree. With my cd collection backed up on a separate drive, the second drive in the HDX is redundant. The software could be updated to reconfigure the hard drives to be used in tandem as you suggest. Would someone from Naim care to comment?

Hutton,
I'm afraid I have no idea if this is possible. Probably worthwhile asking Naim themselves though. Why not send them an e-mail?

I will give it a whirl!
