Frustration by HDX

Posted by: Skysector on 09 September 2011

Hi, i am currently deeply frustrated about my HDX. I´m running the system with software release 1.5a sp2.

in the last months i had differnt issues:

1) When it is completlys switched off and i try to switch it on sometimes i need 3 attempts before the hdx comes up. The naim logo lights but nothing happens - even waiting for a minute. So switch off again and turn back on again...

2) At the beginning cd where in most cases ripped very fast. In the last months i bought some cds - some of them a ripped and it takes more than 20 minutes at avererage.  Right now i have the ben librand "grand 12-inches collection". CD 1 ripped in around 30 minutes. CD 2 not ripped after 5 attemps.  The cd starts after some seconds it stops. While the whole procedure the message "no cd" is shown.... After putting in CD 3 the ripping time after a successful starts show me more than 40 minutes....i had this issues (no or very slow import) with other new bought cds.

3) When an album is played an i want to generate via "quickplay" a new list the hdx says 2loading and than jumps back to the main menu without doing anything (no Playlist, no music). I can try again but the same happens. I have to switch off and turn back on again and then it works..

I am so pissed because i bought a naim product an not a crap of a windows system for 300 bucks.

Once i brought the system to my dealer because of the problem with starting the system. He wasn´t able to reproduce the problem and gave it back to me. Today i tried to call him because im really fed up with this great sounding system.

Today i am thinking of selling this bullshit quality machine.

Sorry for the used words but right now i am so pissed.

Something is wrong here.   I think this needs to go back to the factory.  If I recall correctly on the system menu or maybe using the Desk Top Client you check the system logs for any strange messages.   Anyway this unusual behaviour.

If the dealer plumbed it into their own network and got it working correctly it suggests that your HDX is struggling to hook up to or talk to your network. As to the ripped CDs, I've had two that gave problems and some do take a long time to rip completly - although the files play back fine.

In the first instance an Email to technical support will help. They can do wonderful things remotely. If the machine is repeatedly refusing to rip a wide range of CDs you must have a duffer. before you throw it all out of the nearest window do give support a chance. Part of the cost includes after sales service which is equaled by few and bettered by none.

Good luck with it.

If you are in the US, call David Dever, he can log on to your HDX remotely and try to see what is going on, if not Phil Harris at Naim can do that.

By the way, your dealer dealer should really have installed this and verified your home network. I can honestly say that while we have had some failures, the vast majority of problems we have solved have been customers network and NAS issues NOT related to Naim.

I would have thought that any sensible person would have contacted the local distributor or Naim directly before moaning on a public forum!

Hi all,

thanks for your replies.

Currently the hdx does not rip anything - i will switch of an turn on again --> maybe i am a lucky guy an the system will rip again one or two cds.. ;-)

I am located in germany so  i have to contact the german service organization.

My dealer is on vacation for the next 2 weeks :-((.

Regarding the network issue: I first had connected my hdx directly to a devolo powerlan adapter. Due to the problems i bought an switch and located it between the hdx and the powerlan adapter. This didn´t solve the problem.

Even if the hdx is the only system active in the network i have the mentioned problems. My network consist of a fritzbox, a dell notebook, an imac, a synology 1010+ NAS and a marantz na 7004 networkplayer. All systems including my ipad 2 a working fine. I also control the hdx via my ipad with no problems. I checked the network stability by using an automatic ping generator. The performance is ok and i discovered no lost connections aso. My expection would be that the hdx should fit as is within this environment.

I checked the system messages and ripping alerts via the desktop client - nothing in there...

My HDX has two 500 gig drives with ca 130 gig free space

Gordon - the man is upset: please give him a break; he has spent a lot of money on something he can't get to work - I think he is entitled to have a moan. It is not the customer's responsibility to make a system work, it is the supplier's/dealer's responsibility to do so; I'm lucky as I have a dealer who does that. I'm hoping AS has the same. I'm sure if one of your customers had such a problem, you would sort it out too irrespective of if it were a network or HDX problem. In fact because AS has posted hereon, you have given him sound advice that Naim can help sort out his problem: you've even told him who to contact.

AS I have heard the HDX working and it is good device, I really hope Naim are able to help you resolve the problem and enjoy the music. Follow Gordon's advice and I'm confident you'll get the problem soted out.

All the best, Guy

In fact i have the systems now more than a year. In the beginning i tolerated the problems because they occured rarely. Over time the problems came more often and i brought the system to my dealer as mentioned above. I also checked on the availability of software uptdates and i was hoping that the updates will solve some of my problems. Now i reached a point where i am frustrated.

I switched the hdx off, disconnected the hdx from my LAN, rebooted the system an tried again to rip a newly bought cd. The lid closes and the cd is spinning up for 1-2 seconds - than it stops and nothing happens. So next week i will direcly contact the german support for further steps.

I am a FAN of the excellent english music manufactures. Besides the HDX i have the SN with HICAP and an LP12. Nevertheless the hdx meets my expectation regarding sound, functionality aso. but the current system behaviour is not funny.

download dbpoweramp (it's free). If it rips your problem cds then you know they are rippable.

The HDX is a wonderful piece of equipment. It's not supposed to give you that much trouble. Get your dealer/distributor to sort things out for you and please let us know...
