Transport for London and PCN

Is it just me or do others think that TfL are licensed racketeers with a charter to extort money from unsuspecting road users?  For the first time since the congestion charging zone was set up I drove into Kennington in South London.  I know ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law but I did not realise that the zone extended below the river.  My first mistake.  Having taken every precaution to avoid roads with Cs on them I thought I had managed to avoid the zone.  My second mistake was that you have only 24 hours to pay the charge or face a £60.00 fine.

I hired a Nikon 600mm lens, 1.7 teleconverter, and carbon fibre tripod and head from Fixation for the princely sum of £106.00 only to find a few days later that the PCNs are going to cost me £120.00.  I accept that if I had inadvertently strayed into the zone I should be expected to pay the charge BUT to be punished for not paying within 24 hours seems to me to be manifestly unfair.  It puts TfL in my eyes into the same camp as these unlicensed wheel clampers who extort money from unsuspecting motorists.

There, got my rant out of my system.......  Tell me, the big Cs stands for what?

If Ken was still mayor the congestion region would stretch as far as the M25 by now.

He had Heathrow Airport in his sights.

Steve

First my sympathy.

I have often thought they should have installed big flashing red signs to warn motorists that they were about to enter the C zone. And plenty of room to turn around if entering was not intended.

Alternatively, a quick reminder if you haven't paid within 24 hours, followed by a fine if you haven't coughed up despite the reminder. (unless you can prove you were away from home for a leigimate reason etc etc)

Cheers
