outstanding debut albums
Posted by: Sloop John B on 10 September 2011
probably done before but I was thinking as I listened to Dire Straits eponymous album the other night what an amazing assured debut album it is. This got me thinking of others,
- Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Rattlesnakes
- Jimi Hendrix Experience- are you experienced?
- Vampire Weekend - eponymous
others?
This was their first and best album.
> For me, there's one that stands head and shoulders above all the others I've enjoyed
Me too - it's this
Imagine it was the worst decade for music ever - the 80s with lots of those dreadful bands playing songs by pressing one key on their Fairlight. There I was being subjected to New Order, Spandex Ballet, Visage and well it matters not when suddenly this debut elpee came out
1. "God Gave Us Life" 4:20
2. "******' 'Ell It's Fred Titmus" 2:40
3. "Sealclubbing" 3:25
4. "99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd" 4:39
5. "Time Flies By When You're The Driver Of A Train" 2:39
6. "The Len Ganley Stance" 3:49
7. "Venus In Flares" 2:31
8. "I Love You Because You Look Like Jim Reeves" 3:15
9. "Reflections In A Flat"
and this, of course, (debut eepee)
The Trumpton Riots
Architecture, Morality, Ted And Alice
1966 And All That
Albert Hammond Bootleg
I mean just look at that eepee - just wonderful it made me realise that all I wanted for Christmas was a Dukla Prague away kit. I mean those lyrics hit me like no other, at last somebody writing stuff I could understand
If only you'd give me my Lev Yashin poster back
six months ago i returned your brown anorak
but you keep forgetting
and its far too upsetting
so baby Ferenc Puskas to you
and
I rang Jane Scott for a genuine friend
She was otherwise engaged so I looked round the bend
I saw the wheels of nihilism rolling my way
And now I live life in the bus lane
Yeah life in the bus lane
And you'll never guess who I saw when walking round my local store looking for that 2p off Lenor
Coming to HMHB late down Nigels road so to speak.
I think of all their albums and EPs as being a debut.
Each one could stand up as a great debut album in its own right.
Time of day/month/year.A history of times told in song and music with cutting edge humour.
They have not done a bad recording imo.
The bloke above is in a few Pink Floyd vids if you have a look you will see.

found myself singing lonely sky as I saw birds flying in formation today.
an excellent debut indeed, probably not appreciated due to his subsequent output.

+1
His debut record was exemplary - I bought when it first came out after hearing Spanish Train. However he was never as good again. Of course, it is not trendy to admit to liking any records by him
But how can you not like songs as good as this
IMO,
After his first album his best output was his daughter.

I can't find a decent picture of the cover, but Richard Digance's debut was rather good "England's Green & Pleasent Land" - I have his first three on vinyl. I wish some more of his albums were available, like Chris DB, he was a story teller.
IMO,
After his first album his best output was his daughter.

Did that ferryman ever get paid?
I was looking for the cover of this mans first album to post as a good Debut.
Saw he has this coming out .
You can pre-order it now.
Worth a punt me thinks.
I worked with him on Familys farwell tour in the early 70s.
Nice guy that imo never got the record sales he should of.
Talking of Family,
This was a stonking Debut.
Stu
Good call - in fact so good I copied it twice
Do you remember there Tea Adds at the pictures in the early 70s?
I like Tea,I like Tea, Jolly D.
Stu.
Another great Debut imo.
Outstanding Debut. Remember hearing them for the first time on a session with Tommy Vance on the Friday Rock Show.
Tubular Bells stayed in the British charts for 279 weeks-not bad for someone who composed it at the age of 19
While sorting out some of my LPs I came across this. It's been years since I played it but I can still recall buying it from John Menzies in St.Andrews and practically playing it to death listening to it with my girlfriend late night after late night.
Of course, little did we know then what kind of monster had been unleashed, but if you can just forget for a moment all the Simply Red that came after, it's just about possible to transport yourself back to a time when this was a fabulous debut album with some great songs from a new group fronted by some ugly bloke with shocking red hair but a fantastic voice. It was downhill from here...
"John Menzies in St.Andrews".........that takes me back! Got a few 'LP's' myself there as a lad.
