Servicing a faulty nVi

Posted by: Consciousmess on 11 September 2011

Hi all,

Over the past few weeks, the display on my nVi has got fainter and fainter and now I cannot get any display at all.  Not only this, but locking on to the signal hardly ever occurs and I now don't know which setting the nVi is on to give it time to lock on.  This is because the display no longer works!!

Could anyone give me an idea of the cost to get the nVi repaired for these faults?  Can it get repaired if I take it to my local dealer??

Many thanks,

Jon

Contact your nearest dealer. Naim will replace the display FOC but your dealer may choose to charge fro labour. New software also required.

We have had this fault on every nVi we have sold and the repair has been carried out by Naim FOC. Don't believe it can be done by the dealer though. Ours have all been sent back to Salisbury.

Whilst at the factory, they have also carried out any omitted hw and sw updates too.

I believe that there was an issue with the earlier displays and this has now been sorted, especially as a similar display is being used on the Uniti/Qute/NDX & new SuperUniti and don't really fancy the delights of having to send all of these back too.

£180. Display fixed, a few other components replaced. Result -  a working n-vi display, latest software installed and better locking to spdif signals and also my plasma. Still requires a full re boot every 10th or so power up when it plays a DVD instead of doing what it should be doing and then won't turn off via the remote or power button !

Thanks for that James, that is what my local dealer quoted i.e. all the parts and upgrades are free but postage to and from Naim plus the man-hours servicing came to around 180.

Does the digital lock on not only be quicker but more reliable due to intermittently faint signal?

That may seem to be a silly question, but the optical out from my Xbox and the input on the nVi isn't a firm connection - in fact, I don't think any optical connection is firm compared to coaxial.  It also goes down a 5 metre cable and if the digital lock on can be likened to Windows 7 improving over Windows Vista with regard to drivers for wireless routers......

Does the software and hardware upgrade improve this?

Regards

Jon

PS What I mean regarding Windows 7 over Windows Vista, is Vista intermittently picked up my Airstation USB device (the thing that communicates with the wireless router), whereas Windows 7 never loses the Airstation.

Hi Jon,

Once the n-Vi has lock it's fine and doesn't lose it. It was just quicker to actually lock onto the signal in the first place (this was on a Virgin Media V+ box) after the firmware update.

I wouldn't worry too much about the optical connection - i agree, there is no locking mechanism as it's a push fit type connector but its robust enough to make a good connection. One thing that is worth trying with your X box connection is fixing the incoming sample rate - it's a fix for signals which are not quite as clean as they could be and can be found in one of the n-Vi menus. This may solve the issue.
