Unitiserve, NDX and QNAP settings - help please

Posted by: GrahamFinch on 21 September 2011

I have set up my Unitiserve ssd and NDX and enabled file sharing etc. Whilst the Unitiserve can find the files I have put on my QNAP NAS drive it does not list them by artist or album in the same way my Sonos did. I ripped all the music using dbpoweramp WAV encoder and Sonos finds all the albums, artists and plays albums in the correct track order even after I put them on the NAS.

So far with the Unitiserve/NDX I have got a long list of tracks and they are listed in alphabetical order.

However, Desktop client cannot find anything under album or artist (no data found message) whereas the NDX finds the files in folders in twonky media.

Doesn't seem a very user friendly way of showing my music collection and the manual isn't any help. The Sonos interface seems far superior.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what I might have done wrong or suggestions as to how I can get the info to show up correctly.

I will try ripping a cd and see what happens but don't really want to re-rip my entire cd collection if I can avoid it.

The combo sounds bloody good though. I am very pleased with it straight from the box with little warm up time under its belt.

Thanks.

Graham

If you are referring to tagged WAV files, no, this won't work–convert to tagged FLAC (less embedded cover art - save as folder.jpg) or re-rip using UnitiServe.

You should also set the UPnP settings on the UnitiServe to "Decode to WAV", if you are concerned about differences between WAV and FLAC decoding as regards sound quality.

As has been mentioned sooooo many times, wav and tags is at the very most flakey.

Rip to lac, it sounds the same, don't believe the hype

As I have found out after my recent purchase of a qnap NAS, twonky can't read the tags on dBPA WAV rips.

The solution I am using is "uncompressed FLAC" which holds all the tags fine.

Maybe batch rip a few of your WAV files to this format and see what you think sound

Thanks for the replies.

The point is that I have already ripped all my cds. If I am going to re-rip I will use the Untiserve where choosing FLAC is not an option.

Fortunately, when I ripped the cds I used DBPA multi encoder so I have both WAV and FLAC formats. However, Naim Desktop Client is not picking up the WAV or FLAC files, only a trial rip I did using the Unitiserve.

I am not sure if I have set up my NAS drive correctly but I assumed that the Naim Desktop and the NDX would find any music on a network drive. I don't understand why one needs Twonky Media for example but don't care provided I can get the NDX and Desktop Client to find the music and present it in the correct format.

Surely the Naim software engineers must have recognised that peopel would have ripped their music and be using systems like Sonos. There does not seem to be any software troubleshooting support on the Naim website yet.

If anyone else has the time and is using a Untiserve and/or NDX with a QNAP NAS I would appreciate some advice as to how they set up their sharing.

Thanks again for the suggestions so far.

You don't need to re-rip the WAV, using DBPoweramp you can batch convert everything, leaving it in it's file structure.

Assuming your using poweramp version 14.1+, you have an option to use FLAC Uncompressed - not the same as FLAC 0 - in the drop down menu it's after flac 8. You can then look at the share (Multimedia on your Qnap?) using MediaMonkey, and delete the WAV, just leaving the FLAC UC behind in it's place.

As for the Unitiserve recognising your share, it will. If you used the Multimedia share on the Qnap, you need to point your US at this using the desktop controller, it's only automatic if the world 'music' is in the share name.

If you plan to use the NDX direct from the Qnap, using Twonky, the flac UC will be fine, but anything you rip on the US will not work, for this you need to use the US as the server, and point your NDX at that.

Hi

apologies for the 'interuption'.

how do I change the UPnP settings on my U-Serve to get the 'Decode to WAV'....have gone (thro my PC) to 'System Setup' - 'UPnP Settings' , then....tried all options, exception being  'Compatibility'...it just shows 'loading'....

Thanks

Have tweaked Twonky settings and it is now working much better from the iphone app. Can access the flac and wav files. Shame it is not as straightforward as the Sonos but it sounds mich better!

I don't understand why twonky is in use at all if you have a serve?

If the serve cannot read the tags then it comes down to the flakeyness of WAV tagging, for the most part programmes stick 'sidecars' ont he side of the file containing this info, and as you are discovering otehr apps have trouble reading them. iTunes is just the same.

Long and short is rip again.

I am a Naim newbie with a UnitiServe SSD and a Qute in different rooms both fed off a QNAP NAS via LAN.  My experience having jumped from various Squeezeboxes.

I already had 1000+ CDs ripped onto FLAC via dBPA with lots of tag tidying up esp on classical material so do not want to re-rip.

First up was the Qute which played the FLACs off the QNAP very nicely using Twonky and it found all the music/tags nicely

The UnitiServe SSD then arrived to act as the server and source for main system.  It took a lot of time to get it to see the QNAP reliably (inc a full wipe and factory reset on the NAS).  Making the NAS part of a NAIM workgroup, using specific IP addresses and turning off Twonky etc seems now to have resulted in a reliable set up serving the two systems (US SSD and Qute).

I only see Artist/Album/Track name/artwork in the desktop client or the iPad depite there being a lot more data on the tags.....we are living with this but it is annoying that the rest of the data on the FLACs is not being picked up.  (The few discs ripped so far on the UnitiServe onto the NAS have much more information).

Oh.....it also all sounds great.....

Best way is to rip a disk with the US and examine the file structure; then use DB Poweramp to batch convert (to wav) all your library accordingly.

Just recently got a QNAP TS-269L for use with a NDX.  Is there any Docs or threads on how this NAS, or any QNAP NAS should be set up/configured for best results - i.e what to switch on/off, services enabled/disable, and software installed?  appreciate any help or direction!

Thanks,

Dave.
