Are you kidding me? I love the Goddamn app! I can Goddamn just about anything with it. What's not to like?

Posted on: 22 September 2011 by Frank Abela

OK, so what are you talking about and if we're talking streaming why is this thread not in Streaming Audio?

Except that you can't read the full thread title. To honest thats my only gripe with that particular app.  As for N Stream, well it works but has less functionality than a twenty year old cd player. At least cd players will tell you how far through a track you are and let you fast forward and rewind.

Agreed,...and, that's one of the reasons I miss the simplicity of a CD-player.

I also don't like the fact that modern streaming devices are only properly controllable by Ipod/pad/phone.  First it means you'd have to pay another >200,- bucks to get a proper 'remote', and second I'm very dissapointed in how fast the battery needs to be reloaded again.

(Ipod Touch battery, after about 4 to 6 hours use in my experience, which is quite a contrast to 1,5 to 2 years of changing 2 penlites in a conventional CD-player remote)

alco,

no one is forcing you to not use a CD player.  Even if you are exclusively downloading music.  Burn to CD and play away.

I agree with you Patrick,

Enough reasons for me to consider getting back into CD.

You cannot be serious comparing an iPod Touch and a conventional remote?!?

and another thing, those mechanised textile looms; something has got to be done about them - smash them I say .....

I think I know what you mean Klout10, and I know that wifi and the big touchscreen on an Ipod Touch is aksing much more from a battery, but then again as it's not an option to control a Naim streamer properly any other way I did compare it to a conventional remote.

I prefer a normal remote, which controls source as well the amp, with normal buttons, and which I don't have to reload every other day.

I use PlugPlayer for UPnP. Playlists and track remaining times are both available. It is a bit slow on an iPad 1 though.

The remote which is supplied standard with the HDX can do these things:

Guys,

The n-Stream and n-Serve apps are *ALTERNATIVE* methods of control for the Uniti / UnitiQute / NDX / ND5XS and HDX / UnitiServe / NS0x respectively ... they are not the only form of control.

All of these devices may be fully controlled by the supplied IR remote (the UnitiServe isn't supplied with an IR remote as it is intended to be used as a server only but one can be purchased if required).

The servers and streamers provide much greater functionality than a CD Player (which was the original example given) and so the i-Pod Touch / iPhone / iPad interfaces do provide a more convenient user interface to the servers and streamers but by no means are they the only means of control.

Cheers

@Michell and Phil,

I understand that the supplied remotes can also control the HDX, NDX, ND5XS but the small characters on the small diplay is very hard (practically impossible) to read, from a few meters distance.

So, it's hardly usable to control these streaming devices with the supplied remotes, unless one sits very close next to the unit.

Some people do have their kit set up so that it is within reach - hence why the HDX has a touchscreen on the front panel. My kit is set up only 18 inches or so from the side of my sofa but I do use the n-Serve and n-Stream apps from an iPad to browse and select music even though I do the "reach and twist" for volume...

...the point is that there is the option of using either interface. You don't *HAVE* to use an iDevice to access all of the functionality - you can use whichever fits your requirement best.

Cheers

Phil is absolutely right ; there are other ways. I find the most appealing interface is a touchscreen monitor placed near the music system. Almost reminds me of getting up to flip the record over.

Imho it doesn't make much sense to pay a small fortune for a streaming device and then control it by using the buttons/touchscreen on the unit itself. (it's like going back in time 30 years ago, regarding comfort)

I think you are exaggerating. I've used the remote supplied to the HDX for a couple of months, it works perfectly for skipping tracks, play, pauze etc. and it also controls the volume of the SuperNait. FWIW, I don't sit next to the unit.

Michel

Read my post above.

...ah but you have the *CHOICE* of which interface to use that suits *YOU* the best.

Hmm,...perhaps my eye sight is getting worse then.

I visited a Naim dealer during my summer holidy, for a demo of the NDX.
Lovely device but I couldn't read the info on the display, from about 2,5 meters.

That's why I consider(ed) an I-pod//pad/phone as mandatory to properly control it.

Okay, and what's the problem with that? I think that goes for all streamers, not?

I don't get your point, you want Naim to supply an iPad?

Well we were running a promotion earlier this month where if you bought two "Uniti" devices at the same time then you could get a free iPad2...

No, I don't want Naim to supply an Ipad.

(Way too big and heavy to comfortably use it as a remote)

The main 'problem' to me is the battery issue.

I had an Ipod for a few weeks, which I only used as a remote for my SB Touch.

The control app was free, easy to use and worked perfectly, so no complaints here, but I was quite dissapointed with the battery life.

After using it as a remote I had to complety reload the battery after only 4 to 5 hours.

I recently saw a new streaming device from Cyrus, that comes with a stylish conventional remote with built in display, to show all the track info. (sort of like the Logitech Controller, only slimmer)

That's the sort of remote I'd like to see supplied with a streaming device!
