UnitiServe SSD Database Rebuild -- How Long Should It Take

Posted by: Bill_nyc on 24 September 2011

After clicking 'REBUILD DB" (via the desktop client), the albums ripped using the Unitiserve -- about 100 -- were made available to play fairly quickly.  However, the 500+ albums stored in FLAC are still unavailable 12 hours later.

Everything is stored on the same network device, albeit with several different shares for the FLAC albums (by genre).  All shares have the same settings.   I am seeing "pending" and "updating"  messages, but I don't know how long this should take and whether it is working as expected.  I found the posting below from Phil Harris, but it does not address network share configurations.

BTW, I am rebuilding the database because I deleted a set of FLAC albums manually and would like them to be eliminated from the NAIM database.

Thanks for any advice.

Assuming that there are no other network shares for the HDX to enumerate then the database rebuild should take no more than about 30 minutes for 600 CDs.

The first thing to try is to take a video feed from the rear of the unit into an external display (from either the VGA, s-video or composite video connections) and see what the unit is doing (the front panel display in the HDX is completely autonomous to the player). If you see the Naim CD logo on the external display then point the remote at the unit and press a button - if the external display then shows a GUI then your HDX itself is working OK - if it stays on just the Naim CD logo then your HDX hasn't been able to start up properly and there is another problem that needs to be identified (possibly a corrupt database or some other such issue).

If you are getting the HDX GUI on the external display then can you please drop me an email back to my work address (phil.harris@naimnet.com) with the following information which you can get from the Home -> System -> System Status menu:

IP Address
Subnet Mask
Gateway
DNS
Address Mode
FrontPanel IP Address

With reference to your queries about DTC and tagging external files - DTC *DOES NOT* manage the tagging for files on external devices - any tags in FLAC / MP3 / AAC files on external storage should be managed using your favourite tagging tool (I use "The Godfather" myself.)

Thanks

Phil Harris

Make sure that all Artist folders are at the root of your NAS sharepoint(s); I'd also suggest re-naming the network name of your NAS, frankly, as this will create a completely new entry in the sharepoint tables.

Thanks Dave.  After 24 hours and multiple reboots of the UnitiServe all shares but one are now available.  The artist folders are in the root of each share.  I'll try renaming the NAS next.  Would be good to have an idea how long DB Rebuild should take.

Update:  all shares now scanned.  I manually selected "rescan" for the remaining share that was still not available.  Would like to know how to make the process more efficient in the future -- renaming the NAS is something I will try -- but for the moment I'm all set.

What connections are you using. Is everything hard wired or is there wireless going on?

Do you have firewalls in the way?

All wired, 100mb network.  Copy speeds are fine so the network seems to be performing as expected.  Also, the UnitiServe-ripped albums are on the same NAS and were available  quickly -- only the shares with FLAC albums took a very long time to become available.
