CD Storage, I am running out of space
Posted by: urs on 26 September 2011
Good morning
As the title says, I dont know anymore how to store my collection of about 2500 CDs. I would like to keep them in the original cases. I did google up and down, and I am not able to find an appropriate storage unit, or units. I keep half of the collection in boxes, and the other half are in units that are just about to fall apart, with x-box sets cluttered on top of it.
I wonder how the naim members keep there jewels stored.
Thanks for suggestions

I understand the problem. Try your local fitted bedroom / kitchen specialist. Mine made me a bespoke unit, fitted exactly to the space I have, all for around 350 Euros for 1200 CDs. Much neater and space effective than anything else I found.
May I suggest an HDX-SSD and a ReadyNAS with a pair of 2Tb drives in it?

I have a pair of these in my front room:
They look pretty neat I think - but you'd still need four or five of them.
I'm trying to pluck up courage to go through my collection to find the CDs I dont like and aren't likely to play ever again. I reckon this might get up to 10% of the collection. That'd free up some shelf space for future purchases.

When I filled up the forth Ikea Benno tower, got the plastic J-Loft sleeves. Since starting this regime I am now up to 1400 ish CDs this includes about 10% that are still in special sleeves/ digi boxes, fit into 2 Benno towers, now almost full.
It is the Jewel Cases that are the pain - so try some Covers 33 CD Fleece Packs. They hold all the original material from the CD and take up a fraction of the space. You can put the jewel cases in the loft should you ever need to resurrect them.
Yes, you can use a Vortexbox or HDX, but how on earth do you get a signed copy of the new HMHB album on digital download?
+1 for the Jazzloft sleeves. Not expensive, fits the artwork of a regular jewel case, and allows one to keeps up to three or four discs in individual paper sleeves (after the original case, the next best thing to avoid (micro) scratches on CDs is to store them in envelopes which do not rub against the discs). In my opinion, binders or sleeves with tyvek / non-woven / 'soft' backs are best avoided.
I'd rather not have to deal with sleeves at all, but the size benefits are considerable. And they stay good for longer than jewel cases.
Cheers,
EJ

Guido,
I used to have many CDs housed in fleece packs for a couple of years - the version with non-woven paper-like dividers. The sleeves themselves started to stick together, and the paper left traces on the discs (hardly visible, but still...), which I have been unable to completely remove.
YMMV

Thanks EJ - I'll keep a close watch. May change to JazzLoft then as I don't want to risk my CDs.
All the best, Guy

You read my mind.
Honestly, in my case where I was building a new system from "scratch," the opportunity to avoid the situation of cd's all over the room . . you know how they move around at night on their own . . . clearly drove me to a hard drive music solution
Not the art my wife wanted in our parlor, I can tell you that!
Hi Urs,
If you do want to stay with your CD and not transfer your whole collection to a HD server or NAS drive, etc. I would look into storage solutions which use drawers. In North America we have a number of such options. I use a storage system from a Canadian firm called CAN-AM media, but if you are based in Europe it may be far more cost effective to find local options and not consider shipping a heavy unit or units overseas. In the same wall space that a "bookcase" style CD rack might hold a few hundred titles I can store over 1000 CD's by using more depth. I have seen some similar cabinets advertised in the back of Hi-Fi Plus.
Good luck,
Bruce
Thanks for all of your suggestions. Maybe the 'fitted' unit option is one worth looking into.
Maybe I just need a bigger house!

I got fed up looking for racks.
If you have a wall?Get to B&Q and buy some Flexi uprights and adjustable brackets, I have three spaced out from floor to roof.
They come in white/black/silver/brown
And 8 x 6ft by 6" lengths of 3/4" MDF shelves.
If you buy any a 8ft by 4ft MDF sheet they cut it to size for you while you are there.
£16 it cost me for the board and i already had the black paint.

For the first 2k I used the tallest Ikea Billy + CD inserts which sadly have been discontinued. Now I switched to rotating stand alone towers readily available which hold about the same number. They're not that cheap but probably cheaper per CD than new space saving sleeves. The towers take about 18 x 18 inches square of floor space and don't look too bad.
