HD Music

Posted by: HuwJ on 26 September 2011

I listened to the free HD music off HD Tracks last night, via USB on my nDAC. What a revelation, they were superb.

Of course I now want to buy some albums off HD Tracks but can't, as they only sell in to the US.

Is there a way around the restriction - that does not involve renting in NYC?  If not, is there an European equivalent with the same level of choice?

Use PayPal to pay and don't enter a personal address.

Works for me.

I've planned on making that my first purchase.

HD Tracks could get addicting, and EXPENSIVE

i went for the 192/24  sounds great.  don't know if it is any better than the 24/96?  have not compared.

The 24/96 REM stuff i have from there is also fantastic.

and it is expensive!

Union Station and Alison Krauss - Paper Airplane. Sublime....

And let's not shout too loudly about the flaws in their 'US Only' policy - they may be forced to close a lucrative loophole for them and a great source of HD for us!

They've got a 20% offer on at the moment but nothing appeals. Typical! Let's see what this Thursday night brings.

HuwJ,

I would definitely recommend the B&W Society of Sound. Lots of 24-bit recordings, half of them live LSO, and the rest an eclectic mix. Excellent VFM - just downloading a load of stuff at the moment.

I found HDTracks very inconsistent. For example, albums from the Moody Blues, and the Who's Tommy, were amazing. Beck was really good. Hi-res tracks of Frampton and all of the Elton John, weren't that good, IMO. By that, I mean a plain old redbook CD sounded better than the 96/24 version. There's a few 'computer sound' type of forums where you can hear from others what to expect from a given hi-res download from HDT. Buyer beware.

On the other hand I've discovered incredible new acoustic music by artists I'd never heard, engineered by Cookie Marenco, an amazing producer/engineer/composer. I think she started Blue Coast Records. Naim and Linn are consistently excellent sources of hi-res.

just bought Nevermind from HDTracks.  I noticed the other day that I dont have it ripped, and no clue where my 20 year old CD made off to.  Havent listened yet but so far all are amazing.

Checkout code is hires20 and lasts 'til the end of the month.

Nevermind has received quite a bashing in some circles which has put me off.
