Tree identification, help required.

Hi all,

A friend needs to sort out some unruly trees in his garden, amongst them this. Can anyone ID this for us before we do the wrong thing?

Thanks very much

Hi Tony,

It looks like Alder. An additional clue would be fruit that look like small pine cones :

Thanks, Jan-Erik, I'll ask if he has seen those pine cones. The leaves look very similar.

Best thing is take pics of the yard and a few samples of leaves from different plants to the garden center to help you decide what's good or wrong.  I worked at one years ago, amazing how very few people would bring a picture or sample, or measure their space.  I couldn't tell from their description and they thought I was a poor nurseryman.........

There are apple trees around it, but this one has never produced fruit, and it doesn't look like a fruit tree to me.

Tony, does it ever get Catkins on it?  If so, it's possibly a Goat Willow.

If not, then maybe a non-fruiting crab apple.  Hard to tell for sure without knowing size of the leaf and shape of the tree.

I'm pretty certain it's an apple of some kind. I passed a few very similar trees in the hedgerows whilst out with the dogs this morning and thought, by heavens! They look like Tony's tree!

Then I got back to thinking about the new weather girl on Anglia news...

Yep. Very nice indeed.
How about our own 'A Town Called Alex'?
I'll throw in Alex Jones from the One Show. She makes me go all wobbly.
