Todays Purchases

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 01 October 2011

I can no longer buy music in my local town centre at all: HMV, despite being a profitable branch, was closed; the only other shop the sold CDs was Smiths, and they have stopped selling CDs & DVDs.

It has to be said that the range of what they sold was being reduced all the time.

In the past few weeks I have been having meetings over a coffee on Saturday mornings, and have taken to bouncing around the increasing number of charity shops on the way home, I always think seeing more charity shops is itself a bad economic sign.

Today, for £10, I got:

CD:

Herbie Hancock - The Prisoner;

Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club;

Santana - Supernatural;

David Jaggs - Spanish Guitar Encores;

Soundtrack - Pretty Woman;

20th Anniversay Cast - Jesus Christ Superstar;

DVD:

Anastcia - The Video Collection (inc a PCM soundtrack).

Decreasing amounts of vinyl available.

So I'm the only sad person who dips into the world of Charity shops?

I think it is interesting that the amount of vinyl I am seeing is dipping significantly. 18 months ago there were boxes of vinyl, now it is down to about 20 records or less per shop.

The distribution of CD based material is interesting, lots of magazine give-aways, a la Mojo & Music - before hitting the ex-popular artists(?), like Robbie Williams.

Today I got:

Double CD of with:

Prelude for Peace by Krzysztof Penderecki (not even heard of this); and

Mahler's 5th.

From a live concert, 'World Orchestra for Peace' conducted by Gergiev in Krakow to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of WWII.

Dolly Parton Greatest Hits.

I've got NO Dolly Parton, and at least this does have 9 to 5, which I do like. Let's see if I like anything else!

Bernstein - The Encore Collection.

Uncut Why Don't We Do It In The Road?

A magazine freebie, I think, with Beatles covers by the likes of: Echoe and the Bunnymen; Otis Redding; Siousie & The Banshees; 10cc; Joe Cocker etc.

Couldn't resist.

I bought Mojo a couple of months ago as it included an LP featuring TDSOTM, with the tracks being covered by other groups, and I think it is OK, in fact I would have proffered it to have been LESS reverential to the source.

£9 down.

Hi Mr. Underhill, I know how you feel, I've got two posts in the "Music Room" and I'm the only one who responded to my own posts.

Since I stay at home a lot due to my OCD, I'm ordering quite a bit from Amazon, both vinyl and CDs. We do have a lot of great used record stores here in Toronto. I will try to get out sometime and flip through their vinyl, and the same goes for Charity shops. You never know what you'll find there. I have friends on another forum who get extremely rare audio hardware once in a while, while in these shops. At bargain prices. Tuners, receivers, etc. My niece just picked up a Samsung 40" LCD for $100! And there's nothing wrong with it. There is a lot of vinyl in most of these stores. I still find vinyl at the side of the road, set out as "garbage".

There are more and more Charity shops here in Canada. Except for real estate, the economy is getting worse here. Everyday I'm inundated with unsolicited calls offering to assist me with debt or with lowering interest rates on credit cards, etc. A sign of the times.

By the way, I see you have a very nice stereo system, according to your 'bio'.

Good luck with your hunt for vinyl!

Best!

Thx Dave,

I see the Charity shop frequency as a barometer of economic health, and get concerned when they get as populous as they are around here.

It does give me the opportunity to buy a catholic mix of albums that I generally wouldn't - like Dolly Parton, Hancock and Santana!

At work I did a search of the local charity shops and am working my way through them as well, when I get the chance.

I have never seen anything 'HiFi' in my local stores; I did see a pair of Linn Sara's in a local free ad paper for £75 a year ago, and was SO tempted, they were an aspirational dream in the 80s, and even rang the chap up. Bottom line, I didn't want to fill the house up with MORE boxes!

On this thread just thought I'd post my charity purchases and see if anyone else was dipping into this source of software - apparently not!

Cheers,

Martin, my wife was driving home the other day and noticed an open house. The fellow inside was selling everything, it was his parent's house and both had died. She called me to say he was selling all their vinyl. I asked her what kind of albums, so she started flipping through them and it seemed they had an amazing collection. He was asking a fortune for each album, so I took a pass.

There is a pair of Kans on sale here for $175, mint, original owner. I'm tempted, but I have enough speakers for now.

I'm really glad to be back into vinyl. I have no idea how good the RP3 will sound, Rega still hasn't shipped them to Canada yet, so obviously I never had a chance to audition it, but just looking for vinyl right now is a blast!

I do occasionally browse at the vinyl in charity shops, but the turnover seems low at the moment and I keep checking the same batches of albums. I've had a few nice finds, but most albums are trashed and not even worth the £2 or so asking price. More charity shops are also switched on to the value of some albums and price accordingly. At a pound or two, they're worth a punt and a quick clean on the RCM, but not when they're asking £10 or more.

I dropped CD replay recently, but found a lot more stuff on CD. Housemartins Now That's What I Call.. for £1 is something of a bargain. I keep an eye on the local shops in case they get a nice collection in, but nothing for a couple of months now.

With the demise of record shops I too have to rely on internet buying. It's just not the same as browsing through the albums in Smiths or HMV in days gone by. That's progress for you.

Pete

PS Always hoping for that gem of a find in the vinyl though.

I must say I can't help myself having a good old rummage in the charity shops. Streaming music is great but you can't beat going into your local MENCAP and finding gems like this on LP:

Clint Eastwood - 1980 - Sex Education

498913-michael-garrick-trio-youve-changed

Two of my better recent finds. It is normally a selection of Tijuana Brass and James Gallaway though.

Martin,

You might enjoy what these fellas get up to, "Charity Shop Challenge". Go out armed with a tenner and see what you can find in a day.

We never see Kans in charity shops in the UK.

A good UK Naim dealer/LP12 Master has a nice black pair at the mo.
