Nirvana Nevermind remastered 20 years on !

Posted by: TWP on 05 October 2011

I like a few million others bought this 20 years ago and would argue it is one of the best grunge/indie albums of all time. though not my personel favourite Nirvana album..

As is now customary  just released is the  remastered version with additional cd of rarities and extra dvd  live show etc . . I have read one review suggesting  that the origional  recording is bright and doesent  really capture the "grunge" sound of the early 90's and wasnt what the band had in mind. however it became hugely succesfull and the rest is history.

Has anyone bought  or heard this new remaster  , any thoughts ,before i spend some more money on cd's  does it sound better , worse  or different to the origional?

thanks TWP

"The seminal rock release is getting a Deluxe and Super Deluxe makeover; the former, a double-disc, will have a CD of Smart Studio Sessions, The Boombox Rehearsals and BBC Sessions recordings of songs from the set, in addition to the remastered original album.

The Super Deluxe features those two, plus two more CDs containing previously unreleased editions of the Nirvana "Nevermind" story: The Devonshire Mixes and concert mix Live At The Paramount Theatre, recorded  at their 1991 Halloween concert in Seattle. The 4-CD 1-DVD Limited Edition also boasts a remix effort of the effort from none other than legendary rock producer Butch Vig, instead of the final mix from Andy Wallace. The DVD contains the Halloween show."

I wonder what Curt Cobain would have to say about all of this. I bet he would just love the media hype and newly found commercialism of the band and all those who surround it. He'd probably advise everyone to get the Super Delux with sugar coating and icing on top. After all he was into 'remix efforts of the efforts' type of approach big time, now wasn't he. In his leaving note he also stated that he was sorry that he didn't manage to sell out completely in his lifetime and asked everyone to do their utmost to make sure it still happens after he's gone. I am just glad people are so considerate and only act with the best of his interest in mind. I am sure Mr. Cobain would give them all a big thumbs up, or would be the finger? I wonder!

totemphile,  , i would agree i imagine Kurt Cobain would be apalled at the blatant money making "sell out" of Nevermind , there is little doubt the overnight success of the album and demands  placed on him played  a factor in his suicide.

myself i am not really a  fan of remastered , repackaged  , best of compilations that are blatantly a money spinner. so are reluctant to part with any cash for just updated sleeve notes! .  coming from the John Peel school where generally a  band that  makes it big or becomes mainstream radio fodder  i will lose interest. With Nirvana this was not the case , mostly as i saw them live at the time nevermind came out and to this day still one of the best gigs i have been to..

My question is really does this sound any different to the origional ? is it closer to the sound  allegedly the band wanted ,, not over polished but a rawer sound  like bleach or in utero?   or is it just medai hype as you suggest .

cheers
