Unitiserve / DTC Update to 1.6 & Back Up to NAS

Posted by: ChrisH on 08 October 2011

My local dealer called me this week to tell me they had an update disk for my US (thanks Rich at Music Matters, Stratford-on-Avon).
I've been struggling to work out how to back up my US to my QNAP NAS since I ripped all my CD's, rather worryingly.
However as the update also included a facility for Backing Up, my problem has been solved.

Thanks Naim for thinking of this - it's a real help to those non-techies amongst us.

Once I'd worked out how I was supposed to do it (some instructions would be good perhaps?), the Full back up worked a treat, as did the Differential back up which was a nice feature to avoid copying everything over again.

I'm still struggling - how do you do it?  When I try to schedule a back-up I'm not given any options for the destination drive....

Hi Martin, I struggled with this too, although it now works a treat, with help from Phil Haris at Naim - thanks Phil ! In the end it was easy for him to log into my macine and configure things.

I had bought a Synology NAS, thinking that it would be easy to configure this to do the back up, by pointing it at the Unitiserve. Wrong, I went round in circles and gave up.

Then the U/S firmware update came along. You first need to set up the shared folder on the NAS, and give the US the right permissions to be able to write to the NAS.  In my case we also gave it a manual IP address.

It's then a case of making sure US can see the backup folder on the NAS, and then adding it as the  back up location on the US.

If I could give step by step instructions i would. Hopenthis helps, otherwise a call to Phil wil do the trick.  Took about 15 minutes using screen sharing over Internet.

Good luck ! Paul

Hi Martin, yes I also fiddled around with it for a bit, but got there in the end.

I dont know if this is the official way to do it, bit this is how I set it up:-

- in the Naim Web Browser interface (the one you get when you type in the US name in your web browser, ie. nssrv....), from the Home menu \ System \ Music Stores \ Add new Music Back Up

- then select a folder on your NAS that you will designate as your US Back Up folder (with nothing else in it)

- once your Back Up folder on the NAS has been selected, open up Desk Top Client \ Tools \ Maintenance \ Back Up Monitor

- in 'Source Drive' you should find your US drive in the drop down menu, and Destination Drive you should now find the designated Back Up Folder that you have just set via the Naim Web Browser interface. Choose these/

- first time Back Up choose 'Full' from the Back Up Type drop down menu. Subsequent back ups choose 'Differential'

- Click 'Start' and watch the progress both in files and folders copied, time, and also the progress bar at the bottom.

Im sure you will get it to work, and when you do its a real relief knowing that all of your work ripping your CD collection is backed up!

Otherwise, I have always found Phil at Naim Support very helpful and quick to respond.

cheers

Chris

Paul, Chris, Thanks

Chris - your instructions were spot on.  I had not noticed the "Home menu \ System \ Music Stores \ Add new Music Back Up" option before.

Anyway - followed your instructions and now it is fully backed up, no problems, with weekly differential back-ups scheduled.

Easy when you know how.  It would have been quite nice if the instructions that came with the upgrade (I downloaded mine) had covered this!

I quite like this internet radio option.  The sound is better than I expected, given the bit rates.

Following the original post from ChrisH...

Can anyone advise which NAS to buy to back up all my ripped CD's stored on my UnitiServe?

Chris states he has got a QNAP NAS, is this a good make, if so which model?

My tech skills are very limited i'm afraid. I have searched through loads of threads but there doesn't appear to be a particular make/model that stands out as being reliable, robust, and quiet.

Primarily I'm after a NAS to back up my ripped CD's/playlists incase my Unitiserve crashes and I lose all the data.

Secondly I would also like to store photos on it (I've run out of space on my laptop) and store my ITunes Library/files on it too for the same reason.

I did buy a Western Digital NAS several months ago (before I owned a Unitiserve) but took it back as it ruined my I-Tunes library as once i'd copied all the itunes music files over, the WD NAS changed all the artists names to composers names therefore ruining my tidy itunes library, it was a nightmare!

I only rip CD's to my iTunes library so I can load music onto my IPods/Phone. Will I still have to copy cd's onto my laptop to my itunes library once I get a NAS or will I be able to add music to itunes library from my backed up Unitiserve WAV files stored on my NAS? Copying CD's twice (laptop and unitiserve) and adding to playlists twice etc is a real pain!

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks
