NDX not playing downloads.

Posted by: james n on 13 October 2011

When I borrowed an NDX for demo, one of the files I tried through it, a Linn 24/96 download from Linn wouldn't play. Just bursts of white noise as it skipped tracks through the album. Since getting my NDX I've found a few more that won't play. Some from Linn and some from Naim. Bit depths and sample rate don't seem to be the issue. I've downloaded the albums as Flac files and used XLD to convert to AIFF to go into my iTunes library. Remembering some of Simons comments on embedded art, I tried removing the artwork from one of the albums which won't play (a linn 24/44.1 download) but the artwork seems to be embedded. All files play fine in iTunes and my Linn DS player had no issues with them. Does anyone else get this problem ?

When I get more time I'll try putting them on a USB stick and see if they play.

I am also having the same issue. ITunes plays fine but not through Eyeconnect.

Hi James -

Which UPnP server are you using?  Just a guess that it may be a server issue.  I'm using Asset, and have yet to find a file that my NDX will not play.

In fact, the only issue I've had is with pausing N-Stream for a long time.  I go back an hit play, and N-Stream exits "player" mode, and enters "library" mode.  I suspect there is some kind of timeout limit in the UPnP protocol, but no clue what it is.

Best of luck figuring this out!

Hook,

They are using EyeConnect, so they are on a Mac. And no Asset there.

Up to now, this is the best server I know on Mac. Anyone has a better solution than EyeConnect?

I'm sorry but I personally don't think that EyeConnect is the best solution for Macs; in my experience it was awful. I use Playback with my NDX and it is fast and trouble free. There is a server available on the App Store, which I noted from another post that Jamesn uses, but I have not tried that myself. On the Linn downloads issue, I've had no problems so far since July. Anything BUT EyeConnect will do..

I'm currently running Asset UPnP on my OS X (via CrossOver) and it's working mighty fine.

The scanning of new files is clumsy, but otherwise it's great out of the box.

I've tried it with Majestic, Playback and *cough* Twonky. All do the same. No problems with the DS though which is strange.

Hook - the pause bit is annoying. Glad its not just me !

I've emailed Linn Records to ask about the embedded artwork size. I'll give the USB stick a go tonight.

Now fixed. It turns out to be that for some reason, using Max to convert flac downloads to AIFF worked fine for the red book standard downloads. Anything above 16/44.1 didn't work correctly. Re-importing using XLD sorted all the issues and now both my Linn and Naim downloads play without any problems. Strangely, the DS played these without issue, reporting the correct bit rates
