iTunes management

Not sure where to post so I'll start here.

I may? have missed something, but apart from iTunes annoying behaviour with artists names, ie only filing on the first name. I have come across another idiosyncrasy, when returning to an artists album list the order , I like to order oldest first, and column widths both of which I had set previously are now changed.

Is there some procedure I should be using to fix these settings? Preferences doesn't shed any light.

I'm in the process of setting up a NAS is there anything to gain by using any other music filing system, or alternatively anything that can enhance iTunes ?

TIA

Not sure I can help you with your second and third queries, but the first is sorted by adding something into the Sort Artist field under Get Info - so put in Lastname, Firstname.  The usual name is displayed, but at least in the right order.

Get Info would also show you if the date or year of release is stored.  If it is, I don't know whether you can select it as a sort field.  Otherwise I suppose you could do it manually.  Just like there's the Sort Artist, I think there's a Sort Album - so you could number them in here (although that wouldn't help is you ever sorted by Album title alone).

Okay, got iTunes in front of me now.  To sort by Year within Artist, choose View then Sort Albums from the menu.

I assume the Year is populated when it does the Grace lookup.

Sorry Gavin I don't see Sort Albums from the View option.

What do you have in the view in the centre of the screen?  I have my albums with individual covers as the icons (and not lists of songs for instance).  Can you change your view to match this?  The View menu options could be dependent on what you already have in view.

I have it set for Artist  as grid shows covers covers, albums filed under Alphabet letters.

OK if I set for albums then the view options do indeed change, I'll have a play.

Thanks Gavin.

Had a quick check at home last night, and the View options are indeed different if you're looking at Albums or Artists.  Didn't have time to look for an equivalent ordering option under Artists.
