Asset and Foobar

Posted by: RedOne on 24 October 2011

I've been using Asset UPnp server for a while now on a Windows Xp desktop machine and it does everything I need it to do. I put Foobar on the machine over the weekend and was expecting to have it see the local Asset server (on the same machine) and it doesn't. I have exactly the same version of Foobar on my laptop and it sees it just fine. Does anyone have any clues why when I have them on the same machine Foobar does not see Asset? (I have the the UPnp extension installed in the Foobar environment just fine.)

Providing Asset is running it should be visible in the UPnP Browser window accessed from the View menu. Why not use the server built into Foobar though?

Yes, it is running because I can see it from other streamers. The reason I was trying to do this is because I was in my home study where the PC is running Asset, and wanted to listen to something. What I thought would be a 30 second job, ended up with me trying to figure out why it would'nt work. As you say Peter, I could use the Foobar server, but I know all the warts with Asset now.

OK……so are you saying that you cannot see Asset listed in the UPnP browser window? If this is the case then I don’t know why that would be; you will only be able to use Asset once it is visible in this browser.

Can you send your music to your streamers from your Foobar setup? Were you trying to replay locally via computer sound card or stream to a streamer? Foobar can be set to either play locally or stream easily.

Peter,

the local Asset does not appear in the local Foobar browser. I was hoping to listen through the local PC while I was working over the weekend. Everything else works fine just so long as it is not local-to-local. In the end I gave up and did some work... Ideally I'd get a Qute for the home study as a second system.

Cheers, Red.

Red – You won’t see Asset in the standard Foobar browser window. You must open the UPnP Browser window.

Select from the new browser, playback locally.

Thanks for going to the trouble of replicating what I'm doing. Very kind of you. I should have been clearer. I am using the UPnP Browser. I have Foobar on 2 machines. If I run it from the remote PC I see the Asset server no problem. It is only when I use Foobar on the same machine as the asset server that it doesn't see it. It seems to be a local machine thing... I'd be interested to know if this worked for you. i.e. In your example, are Asset and Foobar on the same machine?

Thanks again, Red.

Hi Red

Hmm, me being a bit dense maybe. Yes, we have both Foobar and Asset on our computers but Asset is usually not running, as we like the way Foobar server works for us. I started Asset just to show that it can be seen even when on the same computer, the difference is our files are on 2 NAS drives.

However, I have just changed the Music folder in Asset to a folder on the same computer and it will not read the files. The folder structure being: Music/Artist/Album, you have to point Asset at the Album level before it will load any files, rather strange, no idea why this should be necessary.

Sorry for not understanding your situation from the start.

Peter
