Arcam BDP100 and 24fps

Posted by: JBBY on 31 October 2011

Hi all

Another quick question if someone would be kind enough to help.

The Arcam does't have 24fps output, is this a must have in a BD player?

This technology is all new to me so any help or other comments on this player would be appreciated.

Have the player on loan until Saturday.

Many thanks

Jason

24fps is NOT a "must have" in my opinion.

But also steer clear of the up-sampled/interpolated processed high frame rate settings (usually your telly does this, rather than the BDP, though). It just looks stupid.

The Arcam does 1080 24P through HDMI. Page E 21 in the manual.

Please let us know how you get on.

Out of interest... Have you compared the Arcam BDP to anything else? The Arcam seamed a bit of a disappointment to me.

Hi Jason,

In my view, 24 fps is an absolute must have, as most blu-rays are encoded at 24 fps, which is the frame rate at which most movies are shot. You may check that your TV is compatible though, as older models don't always support 24 fps modes.

This being said, the Arcam must certainly support 24 fps via HDMI, as Bananahead mentioned above. At least, it is advertised as supporting it.

Thanks, I can see this now. It's a setting that needs to be turned on.

What Hi-Fi list it on their review as not having it.

So when it didn't appear on my TV info as 1080/24 I assumed what hifi were correct.

Silly me.

I would like to compare it to a Denon DBP-2012UD. But struggling at the moment to find a dealer who has one that I could home test.

Just a quick update so far.

The picture seems fine, although my old PS3 had a great picture also so that's no reason to justify the outlay.

Sound is running to my UQ via optical although I will try coaxial tonight.

Last night watching Gran Torino the sound on optical was out of sync, but fine via HDMI through the TV.

The other thing that I don't like is all the white logos on the front of the box.

These are on the back of the Denon.

Don't forget to check out the Onkyo players.

And the old favourite Oppo (and Cambridge Audio) players...

The Oppo 93/95 and 751/651 have excellent picture quality including great scaling for SD DVDs

Great suggestion.

The 809 looks like a lovely piece of equipment and would sit very nicely next to the Naim equipment.

Also half the price of the Arcam.

I think I'll need to see one in the flesh.

I'll have to look at the Oppo also.

Although I couldn't live with the styling of the Cambridge.

Looks like the Arcam is going back on Saturday (at least for now).

Hi

Ended up going for the Oppo, and must admit very happy indeed.

Which Oppo did you get? And what made you choose it?

The 95

Great picture, sound and disk compatability.

Plus, looks great next to the Naim kit.

I hated the logos on the front of the Arcam, the Denon wasn't to my taste and the Onkyo, well more that one dealer advised me probably not the best build quality.

It's still running in but so far so good.
