Remastered Steely Dan cd worth buying?

Posted by: Claus-Thoegersen on 06 November 2011

Hi,

Yesterday I was online buying cds. I found some of the Steely Dan cds I already own, Actually I have all of them. But as usual there are several versions, and since I do not think the sound quality of the original released cds I already own are very good, I am starting to wonder if I should buy some of the remastered cds.

There is a box of the first 8 cds, that people seem to dislike, since it is not remastered  or is not remastered in a better quality. Then there are new versions remastered released in 1999 20000, and maybe even newer versions. So from a sound quality perspective is it worth buying these remastered cds?

Nooooooooooo!  MCLD first pressings are the best in my experience.  Steve Hoffman's Aja from that series is especially good.

The older the better for me, with the possible exception of 'Citizen Steely Dan', a 4 CD box set which unusually, simply gives you the first seven albums verbatim, with a few extras chucked in along the way.

It's a sympathetic remaster by Glenn Meadows and still seems to be available for sensible money - making it great value for the first seven 'Dan' albums in their correct running order.
