Quadrophenia in 5.1

Posted by: C P on 10 November 2011

Last night I was invitted to the Pete Townsend launch of the "Director's Cut" of Quadrophenia. The great man himself was there and was interviewed about the album - he talked about how it was one of the trilogy of great Who albums (Who's Next and Tommy the obvious others). Also talked about how it marked the beginning of the end for Keith Moon - he was beginning to drift away. It was the only Who album he produced and he was proud of it. Anyway, he sang a few toons, then Mr Daltrey came in and was ushered to a seat in the auditorium. Somebody called "Give us a song Rog" but he declined. They played 2 tracks in 5.1 through Five Kef Muons. Ridiculous looking things. Have to say it sounded pretty terrible - but I doubt the acoustics of the room did the mix or the Muons justice. I'd put myself close to the centre of the room, but it still sounded v muddy. However, I will buy it and listen to it through my system - which I hope will do it more justice. I know only a few tracks on the album are in quad - but can't see from the blurb whether who have to buy the £70 boxed set to get the Quad mix, or if the standard priced re-release has the quad mix too. Anybody know?

All in all a good night - and free beer. What's not to like?

Shouldn't Quadraphenia be in 4.0?

I still think Sell Out was their finest moment though I hated the cover.

I think his name was 'Keith Moon'.
