202 to AV amp connection problem
Posted by: Renzo on 11 November 2011
Hi, was wondering if you could help me with a problem. I have a 202/200 combo and was wanting to connect it to my Sony AV Receiver.
So I've connected the 2 phono leads from the Sony to the RCA Aux 2 inputs on the 202 (having already setup the Aux 2 for RCA input as opposed to the DIN one).
I've also tried setting the unity gain for the AV input on the 202 using the mute button whilst in the prog mode. Thing is I don't get sound through the AV selection.
Pressing the AV button I get the light going off on the volume rotor (which I assume signifies that it's in Unity Gain) but I don't get any sound out of the front speakers.
I do get sound from the front speakers though when I use the AUX2 button and using the volume rotor of the 202 naturally changes the volume of the fronts.
The only thing I can think of is that I need to make a connection directly from the AV receiver to the DIN AV input of the 202. I don't know why but I had assumed that the AUX2 input was somehow linked to the AV Unity Gain feature, was I wrong in this assumption?
Thanks for any feedback.

If you are connecting Pre Out (variable levels) from Sony, you need a DIN to RCA adapter with four RCA leads: two in, two out, for the AV on the 202, and UG on. If you are using Tape Out (fixed levels) from Sony, either RCA in on the 202 is fine; turn UG off in that case.

You don't need a DIN to 4 RCA cable. A normal Naim / chord etc 2 RCA to DIN will be fine. Just plug it in to the AV input and set it for Unity gain and your done.

Thanks alot, so looks as if I'll need a 2 RCA to Din lead then. Looking at the 202 manual it looks like it's a 5-pin DIN. Are all 5-pins the same or am I looking for something in particular? Thanks again.

Renzo - just look for an interconnect - 2 RCA to DIN for connecting non naim sources to a naim preamp and you'll get what you need. I'd post a link to something suitable but it would get removed.

Renzo, James is right about the interconnect. Don't get more cable than you need. 2 RCA to DIN uses only three of the five possible DIN pins; DIN to 2 RCA uses the other pins; 4 RCA connects to all five. I like the options the four-lead gives with AV to use both In and Out, as I am able to play my CD5X into 112 into Denon AVR to whole-house, in addition to playing DVD into Denon AVR into 112. You did not say you wanted to go both directions. Nick

Very true Nick. The 4 way gives you that option.

Renzo, I would be interested if you have any earth-loop problems after getting this working. I did.
Good luck.

Thanks alot James and NIck for your input. I'm pretty sure that I will only need the 2 RCA to DIN input, so I'll go hunt for one. Using the AUX2 at the moment but I'd like the unity gain function.
