The return of Jeffrey Tate ..

Posted by: George Fredrik on 12 November 2011

Jeffrey Tate is one of those elusive British conductors, whose work is unfailingly musical, and yet almost un-acknowledged. He made great recordings for EMI and Hyperion over the last two decades, and these are now so rare to get that there seems no trace today that they ever exisited.

Heads up - for those remotely interested ... He is leading Wagner's Flying Dutchman, live, on Radio Three at six this evening.

It will certainly be worth the effort to tune in!

He is a fine conductor, as you say, very musical.

The Flying Dutchman ?  Have you done an about face on Wagner ?  Well that's good to see...

Jim Svedja, who used to have a program on NPR here in the states, recommended his recording (Tate's, that is) of the 'Jupiter' Symphony over the exalted Klemperer.  High praise indeed, and hearing the performance, I'm not so sure he was wrong....

No about face on RW, but if you don't think about it, the effect is exciting. but I am so happy to see Mr Tate back in the loop!

George,

Have you heard Hindemith's string quartet version of Wagner's "Flying Dutchman" Overture?  It's hilarious and you can probably find it on UTube.  Otherwise, there is an excellent CD with the Kocian Quartet on Praga.

Regards.
