Deleting Music from NAS Share

Posted by: Bill_nyc on 14 November 2011

It appears the Desktop Client (DC) does not enable deleting music stored on a NAS share -- that option is grayed out.  What is the recommended procedure?  I can delete the music easily using Windows but it still appears in the DC database.  I would prefer not to go through a database rebuild because the last time I tried that it took three or four days, many reboots of the server, etc.

You should certainly not delete music from a 'Share' using DC if it is not a 'Store'. You should delete it using Windows. In the next periodical rescan, it will disappear from DC. If it is a Store, the reverse is true, don't modify contents with Windows.

Thanks for the info.  Is the 'periodical rescan' something that happens automatically?  If so, how frequently?

the periodic scans are automatic, according to the manual. I am not sure about its frequency. It may be a continuous process, but it may take some time until a change is identified (depending on the size of your collections), but it should never take "days". Rescan can also be initiated manually.

On a Vortexbox you just su to root and type rm -r "*Phil Collins*" from the root directory as a general housekeeping command to delete unwanted tracks.
