How to best setup NAS/iTunes with iTunes Server?

Posted by: Somchie on 14 November 2011

My Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2 will arrive today and I am thinking of using the iTunes Server for music sharing to my ND5 XS.

Now, if I am correct the iTunes program on my Mac is depending on both a library file and the actual music files. Is this a correct assumption?

If so, is the best practice to keep the library file on my Mac and the music files on the NAS. Or am I supposed to have both the library file and music files on the NAS?

I'm pretty sure that they both have to be in the same place. Look on the What Hifi website at the video tutorials, there is one on moving your iTunes library to a nas. Also the 'iTunes server' seems a bit weird to me, when i click on the link in iTunes it brings up a list of tracks in my library but it's incomplete. In any case you're going to need a upnp server running on your nas to serve to tunes to your streamer (your ready nas should have one built-in which you will just need to activate during setup)

Hi Somchie, You may want to take a look at ilounge.com I used this site for most of my guidance during the setup period when I first got my Qnap NAS. It has lots of tutorials and articles on all things iTunes. In particular I found this article on moving the iTunes library and media files useful. Having said that I don't use the UPnP server, Use a Mac Mini in the hifi rack feeding a Naim DAC.
