Auraliti PK100 and Naim DAC

Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 18 November 2011

Has anybody heard of or even tried one of these?

What it will do is let you connect a USB Hard Disk to your Naim DAC.

It renders the music on the HD Disk from 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 KHz AIFF/FLAC and will send the PCM output through a 75 ohm BNC S/PDIF to the Naim DAC. It supports AIFF and FLAC files. It has a network port, but this is only so you can use your iPAD as a remote control.

Technically it uses Linux MPD to render from AIFF/FLAC to PCM and sends this to the Naim DAC via and ESi Juli@ sound card, the box itself has no moving parts. It is claimed to be silent.

There is no UPnP involved. It is around a sixth of the price of a similar device from Bryston, but doesn't share its indestructible build. This is an inexpensive way for the UPnP avoidance society to play hi-res music through a Naim DAC.

However, other than read rave reviews I've no idea if this is a great product or not.

another option is to simply use a computer with digi out.

True - but this this seems like a nice addition to the rack without the need for a computer in the living room. Plus it is low jitter etc ., You can run a Vortexbox with Lynx card and achieve the same thing, it is another way to crack the nut so just wondered if anybody had given it a go.

Oh, you mean Mac peeps.  Got it.  I thought they were all about airplay, hifaces and weiss.

No hiFaces or Weiss around here - I'm a Mac user, I don't do third party drivers

But this box is loveable Linux ..... so everybody is happy

So nobody heard of one of these then?

Hi Guy,

I had missed this post until now; this looks really interesting for DAC owners, and no in-built wireless, whoopee. Appears to be only available direct, although there is mention of higher quality versions being available through dealers, would be good if they arrive this side of the water. An email is in order I think.

Thank for bringing to our attention.

what will the interface be like?  Control Point?

OK, I checked out the site (weak).  How does this differ from a Squeezebox?

So it only works with a connected hard drive?  How do you interface the files?

It certainly looks like a little HTPC to me, so "no computers involved" does not really apply.  It even uses the Juli@ card, which I use as well and like a lot.

Maybe only a little off-topic, but if you can connect a usb stick to the nDAC, why not a usb hard drive?

Posted on: 22 November 2011 by Guido Fawkes

Hi Peter

I think the higher specification version uses a liner PSU rather than a switch mode one so it should be Naim friendly. Most devices of this ilk are very expensive whereas this one seems good value. It also seems nice and easy to use. The advantage over my Sonos is its support for lots of different resolutions; you can also drive it from a web browser so the user is free to use an iPad, iPhone, Android or a notebook PC rather than been forced to choose a device.

It looks a good option for hi-res as it avoids the need to extend network cabling or use wireless both of which can cause problems for some of us.

All the best, Guy

interesting, i did speak to naim with the same issue with regard using a portable hdrive on the nds 5x streamer . i have copied from my total collection a best of artist on a 500 gb drive . it save powering up theserver .the 500 gb running fine and is responsive showing track info etc . i was just worried about the current load of a portable HD compared to  MEMORY STICK .

NAIM just said the the usb was just for sticks.

I sent off an email soon after my first post today so will see what response I get.

I have been looking at a couple of sites this afternoon where this has been discussed and I must say it looks a real possibility. I know that in theory I should be able to build something similar but frankly have no interest in doing so.

With the need to avoid wireless our only option from Naim now is the HDX, I am not interested in the Userve, but as I would probably not re-rip our music this would make it quite an expensive streamer. But, we have not discounted it completely just yet. We would then need a separate tuner as well; kind of emphasises what great value the Qute is.

There is talk of power supply upgrades on the sites I have been reading, but nothing on their website, the L1000 model specifies low noise ps, so even better.

Need to find out what on earth MPD is all about now.

Thanks again

Peter

Hi Peter

MPD is the Linux Music Player Daemon, it runs on the Vortexbox too.

Hi Guy

Thanks for the above info. I was waiting to see if I received a reply to my email before responding but have not done so thus far, (50+ Hours).
